Horse Racing Tips: Battalion to claim victory at Newcastle

The weather continues to cause major problems across British and Irish racing, but there’s lots of all-weather action to keep us occupied on Tuesday if we lose the National Hunt fixture. Southwell kicks us off before they go at Plumpton, Dundalk and Newcastle.
I've got three horse racing tips for across the day - including a bang in-form David O’Meara runner that looks well set to go close now bidding for a hat-trick.
Horse Racing Tips - Tuesday, January 14
12:22 Southwell - Fleeting Moment @ 4/1
This looks like a competitive race for the grade and there are several candidates that appear to be of interest. The thoroughly unexposed FLEETING MOMENT has shown improvement with each of her four starts to date.
Bumping into a well-handicapped horse when second here over 1m4f last time out, James Horton’s filly gave the impression that she would be winning races before long. The winner controlled things from the front and Fleeting Moment was comfortably clear of the third.
Caramay finished behind her that day and she’s in opposition once again, after boosting the form by winning last week. If we take that form literally, Horton’s filly is 5lb better off at the weights here and that suggests she’s likely to confirm the form.
This daughter of Le Havre’s profile indicates that further improvement seems likely on just her second handicap start here and if today isn’t the day, surely she’ll be getting off the mark sooner rather than later.
This is an Extra Place Race, so Betfred will be paying 3 places (1/5 odds) instead of 2.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
17:45 Newcastle - Pals Battalion @ 3/1
Look out for David O’Meara’s runner at Newcastle, as this could end up being a two-horse race and PALS BATTALION looks like the one to side with.
Chasing a hat-trick here, the four-year-old looks well set to run his race once again, having been put up just 2lb for the second of his recent course and distance successes.
The son of Invincible Army seems to have a particular liking for the all-weather, with three wins and a second in six starts on artificial surfaces, and his record here is particularly good.
He got off the mark in a Beverley novice as a two-year-old but it took him a while to get the hang of things in handicap company. Returning to winning ways off a mark of 68 at Wolverhampton in October, he has gone up a stone in the weights since.
Pals Battalion has won his last two by narrow margins and appears to be just doing enough, which means he could have more in hand, and a 2lb rise won’t be enough to stop him if that is the case.

18:45 Newcastle - Tomorrow Day @ 11/8
Upper Lambourn-based trainer Mark Usher is represented solely by TOMORROW DAY at Newcastle and connections will want the 588-mile round trip to be worthwhile.
All three of his previous runners at the track in 2025 failed to win, including this horse last week, but he was only beaten by a head and a similar performance could well be enough.
He has maintained an excellent run of form since the autumn, winning four times over six or seven furlongs, and that’s expected to continue here.
Obviously the handicapper is going to catch up with him at some point but he races off an unchanged mark and could be a good time to catch him with that in mind.
This is an Extra Place Race, so Betfred will be paying 3 places (1/5 odds) instead of 2.
