Lucky 15 tips with alan firkins

It's Friday, January 10, and for our Lucky 15 tips let's head to leafy Lingers and their eight-race Polytrack all-weather card, which kicks in at 11:45. Authoritative 10/3 winner yesterday, but nothing to go with it, frustratingly. At least we get our double odds for one winner element, which meant that we very nearly recouped our stake.

It's the gateway to the weekend - with the weather certainly having its say, fixtures-wise, as so often it does at this time of the year. Some of the sport's big dogs are at Meydan on Friday but there's still a wealth of talent on display at Lingfield. It looks sure to be competitive, and highly entertaining.

Today's Horse Races

12:15 - Alshimali @ 7/4

These modest sprint handicappers win in their turn, and no-one could surely begrudge this Tony Carroll gelding a first career success.

Alshimali was previously with Marcus Tregoning, and joined Tony at his Worcestershire base in early November. It's the last two of three runs all-told for new connections that puts him very firmly in the frame for this; 6f spins here in Surrey, and also at Southwell.

The four-year-old, by Invincible Spirit, was second on both occasions in career-best form territory. He's certainly on an upward curve, and being lightly-raced (this will only be lifetime start number eight), further improvement is highly possible for this ex-Shadwell inmate who now runs in the colours of owner Ms Liza Judd.

He's up a pound for the head defeat suffered 27 days ago but I'm hoping he can take that in his stride. William Carson has the riding assignment for this fascinating heat.

12:45 - Plage De Havre @ 7/4

A 10f maiden now, for three and four year-olds.

Plage De Havre is a lightly-raced gelding who is having just his fourth career start. One run at two, then a prolonged absence of 411 days, before reappearing at Wolves in November (fine effort, beaten less than a length in a novice).

A month later at Chelmsford he again filled the runner-up berth behind a Charlie Appleby/Godolphin runner, and back in third was a Gosden-trained combatant that had already won a race.

Further improvement seems assured, and he's going to take the world of beating on Friday in my book. The superb Dave Probert is on board, and the trip looks ideal given his recent spins over similar.

13:45 - Thapa VC @ 4/1

Unashamedly visiting the Probert well once again, this time on a Mark Rimell-trained seven-year-old that's won over course and distance.

Useful sort this, and an absolute credit to connections with 11 wins from 51 career starts. Thapa VC ran second, beaten just a head, in a similar event here 10 days ago. He was doing all his best work at the finish but didn't quite get there.

The winner, Batal Dubai, is a useful yardstick and it was a competitive contest. This looks eminently achievable and a return to the scene just 10 days later, plus the positive booking of DP, gives me plenty of confidence.

14:20 - Mc Loven @ 7/2

Another course-and-distance scorer now - a four-year-old son of prolific G1-winning sprinter Harry Angel, in the care of Epsom trainer Simon Dow.

Mc Loven contested a virtually identical event here 19 days ago, and failed by just a neck. It was his first run after a little 99-day break and the selection was claimer-ridden that day.

Frequent partner Paddy Bradley reunites with Mc Loven today and the pair have been successful on a couple of occasions previously. He's up a pound for that excellent spin last time (now rated 81) but this consistent type can notch career victory number four this afternoon.

He's become a real 5f specialist but has even got 6f here before perfectly well enough, and that's no bad thing in terms of being strong and running through the line at the business end.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £250 for your total £7.50 stake.
