Nap of the day with owen mcmahon (3)

We've been starved of National Hunt racing this week due to the rain, snow and ice - and the rest - so hopefully Taunton passes a 07.30 inspection on Wednesday morning to feed our appetite.

If it gets the green light, I'm very hopeful about one's chances in the third race on the card in Somerset.

Nap of the Day - Wednesday, January 8

  • 13:45 Taunton - Torneo @ 2/1

TORNEO has been unfortunate to meet well-handicapped rivals on each of his three starts over fences to date, but I suspect he gets his turn at Taunton on Wednesday.

Jamie Snowden's five-year-old was third, beaten over 16 lengths, on his chasing debut at Uttoxeter in mid-October off a mark of 109, but that form doesn't look at all bad in hindsight.

The winner Tedley, rated 113 at the time, is now 16lbs higher after recording form figures of 12223 on his next five outings. Runner-up Cabhfuilfungi is 120 (from 110) as a result of winning a three-runner race at Southwell on New Year's Day by a whopping 33 lengths.

Torneo then went to Wincanton a month later and was just touched off by a horse called Famoso, who followed up next time out and has seen his mark raised 10lbs in fairly quick succession.

The selection's latest appearance was at Hereford in December, and he bumped into one again in the form of Beat Box for the Skeltons. That rival, successful in four of his last five runs, was made to work for his victory and has since franked the form in no uncertain terms, bolting up by 16 lengths off a five-pound higher mark to earn a revised rating of 130.

Torneo has just bumped into a few since tackling the bigger obstacles, but he's acquitted himself very well in defeat without rising much at all in the handicap - and this 0-110 novices' affair rates an outstanding opportunity for him to get off the mark in this sphere.

Warren Greatrex's Largy Force is the main danger in my book. She emerged well from her chasing debut at Hereford just before Christmas after wind surgery a couple of months prior, but a three-pound rise for finishing third looks harsh.

Any Biscuits is hard to weigh up on his chasing debut and it would be no great surprise if Commanding View leaves his previous effort a long way behind, although he was beaten 39 lengths and doesn't appear obviously well treated off 111. Otherwise, it's modest opposition to say the least.

I fancy the selection is already a 115+ horse and as a five-year-old with just eight runs over obstacles to his name he's entitled to keep improving, so I'm hoping he'll be very tough to beat under these circumstances.
