There are three meetings scheduled to take place across Britain on Monday but the National Hunt fixtures are at the mercy of the weather, with morning inspections announced at both tracks.

Ludlow is scheduled to kick us off before the action continues at Ayr, and the evening entertainment is provided by Wolverhampton’s eight-race all-weather card. With the weather in mind, we have selected three strong fancies to follow for our horse racing tips at Wolverhampton and chief among them is a progressive new recruit for Mick Appleby that is expected to remain ahead of the handicapper for the time being.

Horse Racing Tips - Monday, January 6

  • 18:00 Wolverhampton - Orangesandlemons @ 6/4
  • 18:30 Wolverhampton - Royal Zabeel @ 10/3
  • 19:00 Wolverhampton - Havana Force @ 7/2

18:00 Wolverhampton - Orangesandlemons @ 6/4

Edward Bethell hasn’t taken long to establish himself as a useful operator and his runner ORANGESANDLEMONS looks like the one to side with in this maiden.

She showed loads of potential when runner-up behind a Roger Varian filly on debut at Newcastle and may well have finished closer if not for getting off to a slow start. Very professional on the whole, there was plenty to like about that performance.

The daughter of Mayson was runner-up again over the same course and distance next time and was only half-a-length behind the winner.

It’s unlikely that she’ll need to find too much improvement to go one better here and the three-year-old is expected to go close once again.

18:30 Wolverhampton - Royal Zabeel @ 10/3

This race looks pretty competitive and understandably so, with such a decent prize pot on offer. Appleby runs ROYAL ZABEEL here and the four-year-old has only had four starts in handicap company thus far.

It was an excellent performance from him at Southwell last time out and he comfortably came out on top by a length and three quarters. Well on top at the finish, he appeared to have plenty in hand.

That was just his second start for this yard, having been picked up by the rather shrewd Horse Watchers in the autumn and further improvement is anticipated.

Making just five starts for James Tate, he managed to win once for that yard and had a couple of shots at Listed level, which proved beyond him at the time.

His dominant victory in a Pontefract maiden in his juvenile days suggested he has plenty of ability and a rating of 91 may not be enough to contain him if continuing on an upward trajectory.

19:00 Wolverhampton - Havana Force @ 7/2

There are two last-time-out winners among the 10-runner field here and the most interesting of the two is four-year-old HAVANA FORCE.

Marco Botti’s runner managed to shed her maiden tag in good style over course and distance when last seen.

Ridden patiently in the early stages, she made smooth progress to take the lead heading into the final furlong and was strong at the finish, pulling clear to score by three lengths.

Despite the fact that it took 12 starts for the penny to fully drop, that performance definitely indicates that she’s heading the right way and it would be no surprise to see her go in again.

The handicapper has since raised her 7lb, which is hard to argue with after that performance, and it shouldn’t be an insurmountable obstacle here.
