Nap of the day with owen mcmahon (3)

On a quiet Wednesday unlikely to live up to the high-drama of Constitution Hill galloping round Newbury just 24 hours earlier, we head to Warwick for the Nap of the Day.

Nap of the Day - Wednesday, November 20

  • 14:10 Warwick - Booster Bob @ 3/1

Helnwein is an exciting recruit to chasing, but I'm opposing him in this 0-130 novices' handicap over two miles.

Alan King's six-year-old boasts arguably the strongest piece of form in the field - being his victory in the lucrative Novices' Championship Final Handicap Hurdle at Sandown in April - but he concedes both weight and fitness to some useful rivals on his debut over fences.

Moveit Like Minnie is one of those. He made a highly-encouraging start in this discipline at Stratford a couple months ago before failing to complete his subsequent two starts while looking to challenge the eventual winners. Nigel Twiston-Davies' seven-year-old sports first-time cheekpieces and should run his race again.

I'm sure Lucy Wadham's Telepathique, an 11-length winner on her chase debut recently, will have supporters too, but I think BOOSTER BOB can beat them all.

Olly Murphy's six-year-old went unbeaten in his first three runs over hurdles during the first half of last season, culminating in Listed success at Sandown - beating the reopposing Helnwein off level weights (the selection receives two pounds on Wednesday) by 1¾ widening lengths.

I assume he had issues immediately after, for he didn't appear again until 72 days later and was completely unrecognisable in handicaps at Carlisle and Newcastle, failing to beat a single horse home.

As a result, he was dropped four pounds to a mark of 120 ahead of his chasing debut at Ffos Las just over a month ago, which proved generous as he travelled all over his seven rivals to win by a couple of lengths.

The reopposing Moveit Like Minnie unseated three out, but there's no doubt who was going better at the time and given the significantly greater upside the selection has, I would expect him to win that particular battle off just four-pound worse terms.

That Ffos Las form has been working out very well. The third and fourth both won next time out, while the aforementioned Moveit Like Minnie was going well before running out in an even stronger contest at Aintree the other week.

I think a rise of just six pounds for what was a straightforward victory underestimates Booster Bob, who has so much more to give - especially over fences.

As per a recent stable tour with AtTheRaces, Murphy suggested his son of Malinas could "sneak into Graded company", calling him a "handicap chaser to keep on the right side of." I certainly will.

On top of all that, his trainer and jockey are both operating at a strike rate of about 30 per cent. There's lots to like about this one's chances.
