Saturday racing tips with owen mcmahon

I've already covered the action from Cheltenham here, so my Saturday racing tips will consist of horses running elsewhere.

A couple of selections each from Wetherby and Navan make up my four selections, which includes a 10/3 Nap.

Saturday Racing Tips - November 16, 2024

  • 13:35 Wetherby - Densworth @ 10/3
  • 14:10 Wetherby - Kalium @ 9/4
  • 14:33 Navan - Captain Guinness @ 11/4
  • 15:43 Navan - He Can't Dance @ 6/5

13:35 Wetherby - Densworth @ 10/3

We begin at Wetherby for a 0-140 handicap chase over 2m3½f, where a chance is taken on Ben Pauling's livewire DENSWORTH.

The seven-year-old son of Kayf Tara has been rather frustrating to follow to date. He seems to either bolt up or get pulled-up - no in between.

He made his debut over fences in a hot handicap at Aintree last month and ran a race full of promise. He jumped well and travelled stylishly for a long way, before running out of steam approaching the second last.

That was confirmed in a recent stable tour with Sporting Life, as Pauling said he "took a right old blow" and to expect "a different horse" next time out.

He's been dropped three pounds for that effort and 10lb claimer Callum Pritchard, who boasts an impressive strike rate over fences - 29 per cent this season and 19 per cent over the last five years - takes over in the saddle, so he's essentially 10lbs lower here.

His profile is undoubtedly risky, but if he's on a going day he could make a mockery of this low weight (10st 7lbs) and he rates my Nap of the Day.

13:35 Wetherby - Winner Densworth

Odds correct at time of publishing.

14:10 Wetherby - Kalium @ 9/4

Just over half an hour later, still in West Yorkshire, is a two-mile 'Introductory' Hurdle that's attracted just five runners.

None of the field can be ruled out with confidence, but it's Tim Vaughan's KALIUM that gets my vote.

The four-year-old son of Gentlewave has run just twice to date, winning a bumper during a short spell in Ireland by a whopping 19 lengths, before a solid second in a novice hurdle at Ludlow a few weeks back.

That was a strong race. The winner, La Marquise, is seen as a Mares' Novices' Hurdle prospect and the fourth-placed Oh My Johnny, who was five lengths adrift of the selection, looked set to win a nice race at Bangor earlier in the week but for falling at the final flight.

With that under his belt, he looks set to make a very bold bid in what looks an easier assignment.

14:10 Wetherby - Winner Kalium

14:33 Navan - Captain Guinness @ 11/4

My attention then turns to the action at Navan - specifically the G2 Fortria Chase.

I suspect Gordon Elliott's Found A Fifty will prove popular and Banbridge always has supporters, but I think exactly two miles on quick ground is as sharp as both horses want.

It's perfect for CAPTAIN GUINNESS, however, who is the selection.

He was only a neck behind the fast-finishing Banbridge at Punchestown back in April, but that was over half a furlong further and on slightly softer ground, so I can see that form being reversed.

Henry de Bromhead has started the current campaign in red-hot form, operating at an impressive 36 per cent strike rate in the past fortnight, and Captain Guinness has a fantastic record fresh, so the Champion Chase hero is taken to win this race for third year running.

14:33 Navan - Winner Captain Guinness

15:43 Navan - He Can't Dance @ 6/5

Finally, I'm suggesting Gordon Elliott's HE CAN'T DANCE in the bumper at Navan.

This looks a bit of a match between the Cullentra pair and jockey bookings - although not the betting - would suggest the race-fit Whinney Hill is the number one hope.

Whinney Hill may be sharper, but his form is nothing more than okay and there's been a lot of chatter about the selection, who fetched £300k back in April following a ready PTP victory, over the last few months.

Carl Millar is a very useful seven-pound claimer and getting four pounds from the aforementioned Whinney Hill, his mount is the one to follow as far as I'm concerned.

15:43 Navan - Winner He Can't Dance
