Shu

Hot prospect Bruce Carrington returns to the ring this Friday, November 15 against Dana Coolwell. ‘Shu Shu’ struts onto the Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul card at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Netflix will broadcast the event live on their platform.

Here are my Carrington vs Coolwell predictions ahead of Friday’s fight.

Carrington vs Coolwell Betting Tips

  • Carrington by knockout @ 7/4
  • Fight to go the distance - No @ 13/8

Carrington has been active this year, with the Coolwell fight representing his fourth ring outing. ‘Shu Shu’ last stepped out on September 27, when he had a tougher-than-expected time with Sulaiman Segawa. The controversy surrounding that majority decision win may explain the quick turnaround here.

The 2020 Olympic trialist accomplished the dubious feat of causing his hometown crowd to boo the result. The idea was to give Carrington a step-up in class against a wily gatekeeper. But Segawa’s southpaw awkwardness gave Bruce fits and he was never able to consistently disrupt his rhythm. Most viewers concluded that Segawa had done enough to win a cagey 10-rounder. Even the New York crowd sided against their man.

Carrington got the nod on points, keeping that money-spinning unbeaten record. But the fact he is motoring into another fight so soon suggests a need to clear the bad taste. ‘Deadly’ Dana Coolwell will occupy the B-side in this one as Carrington looks to improve upon his dark night of the soul.

Coolwell isn’t a bad opponent but, despite his ‘Deadly’ moniker, he is a less dangerous one than Segawa. The Ugandan had sharpened his tools against big names like Jamaine Ortiz, Abraham Nova and William Foster III. Segawa also held an upset win over Ruben Villa. Coolwell has almost solely been a domestic turn, amassing a 13-2 record primarily fighting opposition from his native Australia.

Coolwell can fight. He is a former Australian super featherweight champion after all. But this is by far the biggest stage and toughest fight he has encountered. The mainstream nature of the event means Coolwell will be in front of more eyeballs than ever before. Quite a platform to make a statement against a fighter who might just be licking his wounds.

The distance is interesting here. Despite both men having taken part in several scheduled 10-rounders, this bout is scheduled for eight. No explanation has been given for the truncated length. It could be a symptom of Carrington going 10 hard rounds mere weeks ago. Perhaps it is due to time constraints, a victim of its placement on a packed Netflix extravaganza.

What this means is that Carrington cannot afford a slow start. The mentality must change with two less rounds to work with. ‘Shu Shu’ must jump on his opponent from the off and assert dominance. Segawa’s performance warned Carrington against the dangers of giving his opponents a way in. The same generosity could well be punished here.

Bruce Carrington vs Dana Coolwell Prediction

Carrington will be well aware of the negativity surrounding the Segawa win. A big performance on a card likely to attract a huge audience would help. Carrington’s reputation is as much at stake as his unbeaten record, maybe moreso. Even an underwhelming win here could draw significant backlash.

For what it’s worth, I think ‘Shu Shu’ will impress here. I’m expecting a knockout in his favour, at odds of 7/4.
