Saturday racing tips with owen mcmahon

Away from Champions Day at Ascot, which I've already covered here, it looks a quiet Saturday on the racing front, with cards from Catterick, Limerick, Stratford, Leopardstown and Wolverhampton.

As a result, I've got just three Saturday racing tips - headed by a newcomer to the in-form Olly Murphy yard who rates the Nap of the Day.

Saturday Racing Tips - October 19, 2024

  • 14:20 Stratford - Westerninthepark @ 15/8
  • 15:20 Limerick - World Of Fortunes @ 13/8
  • 15:40 Leopardstown - Thrice @ 9/4

14:20 Stratford - Westerninthepark @ 15/8

Olly Murphy's in stunning form at the moment - operating at a 31% strike rate in the past fortnight - which bodes well for WESTERNINTHEPARK on his debut over fences.

The six-year-old son of Walk In The Park was a useful bumper horse for Milton Harris before embarking on a short but promising career as a novice hurdler for Anthony Charlton.

He was successful on his first start for that yard in a maiden hurdle at Plumpton back in January, before fairly bolting up at Fakenham in a novice event the following month. He was giving 10lbs to a subsequently eight-length winner who ran to his mark in the early 120s throughout the rest of the campaign.

He then went to Sandown for a Grade 3 handicap, off a mark of 118, and finished a highly-respectable fifth of 17, beaten six and a half lengths.

Now, 224 days later, he makes his chase debut for new connections off just a pound higher, which I suspect underestimates this former point-to-pointer who looks made for the bigger obstacles and ought to be ready given his handler's recent form.

He's my best bet this Saturday.

14:20 Stratford - Winner Westerninthepark

Odds correct at time of publishing.

15:20 Limerick - World Of Fortunes @ 13/8

On paper, this Listed novice hurdle over 2m5f is a step up in class for Liam Kenny's WORLD OF FORTUNES, who has only raced against her own sex to date.

However, I'm not convinced that's the reality. Four of her seven rivals are mares anyway and A Tipp For Gold and Big Chou are arguably less dangerous than Paggane, whom the selection beat by four widening lengths at Listowel last month.

I suppose Willie Mullins' Ninth Titan is the exception, but I think he's overrated at 128. He's the main danger, though.

World Of Fortunes is a perfect 2-2 since going hurdling this season, following a solid bumper campaign last term, winning both starts with ease.

This looks a great opportunity for her to land the hat-trick.

15:20 Limerick - Winner World Of Fortunes

15:40 Leopardstown - Thrice @ 9/4

Finally, I suggest a small wager on THRICE for this juvenile Group 3 over 1m1f.

Assuming Wayne Lordan got first pick, choosing the 103-rated Trinity College, the selection appears Aidan O'Brien's second-string, but there's few better jockeys than Colin Keane on either side of the Irish Sea so that's far from a negative.

His mount is a son of Wootton Bassett who followed up a promising debut, finishing less than a length behind promising stablemate Officer in third, at the Curragh in late August with a four-length triumph at Listowel exactly a month later.

Given he was a 1/4f, it'd be easy to look down on that form but the runner-up, who was seven lengths clear of the rest, previously ran very well behind subsequent Group 3 winner Delacroix (rated 109) which gives weight to the form.

Bar Trinity College, who's far from bombproof, this is a modest renewal, so I have it between Aidan's two - with Thrice getting the nod.

15:40 Leopardstown - Winner Thrice

Odds correct at time of publishing.
