Bruce Carrington vs Sulaiman Segawa Predictions: ‘Shu Shu’ gets a gatekeeper at his peak

Hot prospect Bruce Carrington takes on Ugandan gatekeeper Sulaiman Segawa this Saturday, September 28. The fight takes place at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York. It comprises part of the undercard for Sandy Ryan vs Mikaela Mayer, with Sky Sports+ broadcasting the event live.
Here are my Carrington vs Segawa predictions ahead of this intriguing featherweight fight.
Carrington vs Segawa Tips
- Carrington on points @ 21/10
Carrington steps up in a big way here, having been burdened for a while now with glorious purpose. The 27-year-old is a long-time tip for the top, having only missed out on the 2020 Olympics due to COVID delays.
The Brooklynite has moved fast and, impressively for prospect, he has never fought a pro opponent with a losing record. His last two fights saw Carrington move up in class. ‘Shu Shu’ snagged ranking belts against Bernard Angelo Torres before defending them opposite Brayan De Gracia.
Those baubles have seen Carrington crash into the world rankings, the number-one slot for the WBA, number-two with the WBO and WBC and eighth-place with the IBF. Keep going as he is and Carrington is guaranteed a mandatory shot in the near future.
Which makes Segawa both smart and dangerous as a next opponent. Smart because, if Carrington is to lift world honours, he needs to face better opposition. Dangerous because Segawa is more than capable of upsetting bigger names.
We saw that last time out when the Uganda surprised Ruben Villa. The former world champion was unbeaten in his last four and looked set to challenge again in the near-future. But Segawa snapped that streak and outpointed the favourite in July.
That win has earned Segawa another spotlight attraction and a chance to capture a second major scalp. He also snatched a number-eight ranking with the WBO for his troubles, elevating a career usually spent on the wrong end of defeats to the world’s best.
Segawa has provided good tests for the likes of Abraham Nova, Jamaine Ortiz and William Foster III. But until Villa, he had never beaten a man of that quality. This has a dual-effect on this fight.
An emboldened Segawa makes this a better fight for Carrington’s development and pedigree. Few will complain ‘Shu Shu’ was gifted a soft-touch after the Villa upset. But a motivated Segawa can make this a very tough night for a prospect expecting to meet a typical gatekeeper.
Odds correct at time of publishing.

Bruce Carrington vs Sulaiman Segawa Predictions
This is a real fight for both men. The sort it would be nice to see more of on big undercards. A learning fight though it may be, it should be absorbing.
I think Segawa will be buoyed by that Villa victory and will do enough to take this to the final bell. Carrington is favoured to stop him but I don’t think we’ll get the finish from ‘Shu Shu’.
I’m going for Carrington on points at odds of 21/10.
