Saturday racing tips with owen mcmahon

Saturday's racing consists of seven meetings across the UK & Ireland, including two Premier cards from Newbury and Ayr.

My Saturday racing tips features five selections from Newbury, Navan and Chester and is headed by a 4/1 NAP at the latter venue.

Saturday Racing Tips - September 21, 2024

  • 14:05 Newbury - Our Golden One @ 15/2
  • 15:15 Newbury - Shadow Of Light @ 5/2
  • 15:45 Navan - Silver Sixpence @ 5/1
  • 16:15 Chester - Radio Goo Goo @ 4/1
  • 17:00 Newbury - Amphius @ 6/1

14:05 Newbury - Our Golden One @ 15/2

The first of my Saturday selections is OUR GOLDEN ONE in the Autumn Cup Handicap - a 0-105 contest over 1m5½f - at Newbury.

Despite winning just once in four starts, Tom Ward's three-year-old daughter of Golden Horn has been quite progressive this term, rising from a mark of 79 when landing a competitive handicap at Doncaster in April to her current rating of 95, achieved for a solid second at Goodwood last month.

That was just her second attempt over 1m4f+, having previously finished third in Listed company at Longchamp, and she now tackles the longest distance of her career to date. I suspect that could bring more improvement from this filly, who's also one of the least exposed of this 15-strong field with just seven runs to her name.

I'm speculating a little here, but note that Hollie Doyle maintains the partnership despite her riding current favourite Waxing Gibbous last time out. Interesting.

This is an Extra Place Race, with four available instead of three at 1/5 the odds for all each-way bets. Betfred are also offering your stake back (up to £10) as a free bet if your selection finishes second.

15:15 Newbury - Shadow Of Light @ 5/2

Next on my agenda is an exciting renewal of the Mill Reef Stakes.

It was hard to be anything but impressed by Powerful Glory's debut at Pontefract last month, but that form has taken a few knocks and he's short enough pitched straight into Group 2 company.

Charlie Appleby's SHADOW OF LIGHT, meanwhile, is well worth his rating of 108 having made easy work of a maiden and novice event at Yarmouth and Newmarket respectively prior to a staying-on second in the G2 Gimcrack Stakes at last month's Ebor Festival at York.

That's strong form and I expect him to confirm superiority with the reopposing Symbol Of Strength, who has the beating of Brian on his Group 3 success at Kempton a fortnight ago.

As a son of Lope De Vega, whose progeny tend to go well on softer ground, any overnight rain ought to be no bother for this half-brother to Earthlight, who won the G1 Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes during an unbeaten two-year-old campaign in 2019 and also thrived in such conditions.

15:45 Navan - Silver Sixpence @ 5/1

Betting on debutants is a rarity for me, but Ger Lyons' SILVER SIXPENCE appeals in what rates a modest mares' maiden at Navan.

The three-year-old daughter of Kingman is out of a Nathaniel mare called Natavia, who produced Ralph Beckett's smart Haskoy. She was retired after just four runs, but in that short space of time she reached a mark of 109 after coming fourth in the 2022 St Leger as a juvenile and winning a Group 3 on her sole run at three.

Silver Sixpence is bred to be more than able to perform to a level in the low-mid 80s first time out, which should be enough to win this 1m2f event unless Aidan O'Brien's North Africa and son Joseph's Valinor, who set the standard, improve significantly.

16:15 Chester - Radio Goo Goo @ 4/1

Over sprint trips at Chester, you're looking for prominent racers drawn low - and course form is very important too. RADIO GOO GOO ticks all three boxes.

David Evans' four-year-old, who will break from stall two, almost always makes the running and her form on the Roodee reads 1191, with that one defeat easy to excuse due to soft ground and a high draw (10).

She's incredibly consistent and has dropped to her last winning mark of 87 after a fine effort at Kempton over six furlongs.

Back at Chester, over the minimum trip and priced very fairly, she rates NAP material.

17:00 Newbury - Amphius @ 6/1

Last but not least, I'm suggesting Harry Charlton's AMPHIUS for this 20-runner handicap over seven furlongs.

The three-year-old son of Kingman makes strong appeal off a mark of 91 with the outstanding Ryan Moore in the saddle for the first time.

He bumped into Economics (123-rated Irish Champion Stakes hero), Indelible (104) and Roi De France (95) in his first three starts, before finishing a close second off an opening mark of 87 in a Kempton handicap in August. He was then found a good opportunity to get off the mark at Beverley, before returning to handicap company on Saturday.

He's starting to look a lot more straightforward and this seven-furlong trip looks optimal for now. I will be disappointed if he's not better than a mark of 91 given his proximity to the aforementioned rivals when still novicey earlier in his career, for as much as a bit of luck in running will be needed in this big field.
