Doncaster st leger

The action continues to ramp up at Doncaster on Friday afternoon with day two of the Betfred St Leger meeting taking centre stage.

We have a selection from the action on Town Moor as well as a couple of picks from the jumps card in Ireland. Amongst our fancies is a last time out winner who has looked progressive this term and a longer trip could see him excel again.

Horse Racing Tips - Friday, September 13

  • 13:50 Doncaster - Shadow Dance @ 11/4
  • 16:00 Ballinrobe - Caman Eileen @ 9/4
  • 18:15 Ballinrobe - Joe’s Turn @ 5/4

13:50 Doncaster - Shadow Dance @ 11/4

Doncaster’s opener is the Betfred Mallard Handicap and features several potentially promising stayers and none more so than SHADOW DANCE for Roger Varian.

The son of Almanzor improved when stepping up to middle distances last campaign, winning a competitive handicap at Haydock before a narrow defeat in the Old Rowley Cup at Newmarket.

He was gelded in the off-season and clearly needed his return when too keen at Royal Ascot but he hasn’t looked back since, running a highly promising race at Ripon on his penultimate start, looking like the winner before becoming unbalanced at a crucial stage. However, he picked up again to close to within a length of the winner.

The four-year-old then went one better to score in what looked like a particularly deep race at York. The runner-up, Lieber Power, had been in cracking form going into that contest and Shadow Dance pulled out more when that rival got close in the closing stages.

Furthermore, this gelding has shaped like he’s going to relish longer trips and if he continues on his upward trajectory, he could be a Cup horse for next year. A 5lb rise in the weights looks manageable and he ought to go well on his first run at this track given that it’s not too dissimilar to York and Haydock where his two previous wins have come.

16:00 Ballinrobe - Caman Eileen @ 9/4

The mares’ maiden hurdle on Ballinrobe’s card doesn’t have a great deal of depth and CAMAN EILEEN could take some beating if she’s back in form.

The mare disappointed in a maiden hurdle at Roscommon last time when stopping quickly but the fact that she’s been turned out again quickly is a positive sign and she had previously looked like a nice prospect when going close in another maiden hurdle at that venue.

This bumper winner may appreciate getting back on to quicker ground this time and she sets a solid standard on form in this contest.

18:15 Ballinrobe - Joe’s Turn @ 5/4

There was plenty of money around for JOE’S TURN ahead of his stable debut at Kilbeggan three weeks ago and he justified favouritism in the style of a horse that is well handicapped.

The son of Jetaway had shown plenty of promise for his previous yard and his two chase starts suggest he could be even better over the larger obstacles.

He’s got a 10lb rise in the weights to cope with this time but he’s unexposed and he pulled a fair way clear with a re-opposing rival at Kilbeggan so there’s probably a fair amount still to come from this eight-year-old.
