Nap of the day with owen mcmahon (2)

Our winning run unfortunately came to an end on Friday, but hopefully we can get back on track on Saturday courtesy of a 10/1 chance on Haydock's Sprint Cup card.

Read on for the detailed reasoning behind my NAP of the Day.

NAP of the Day - Saturday, September 7

  • 13:50 Haydock - Across Earth @ 10/1

Newmarket-based Italian trainer Marco Botti sends his three-year-old ACROSS EARTH markedly up in class at Haydock on Saturday – and I think the son of Golden Horn can justify his handler’s faith.

This Class 2 handicap over 1m6f is a significant step up from the Class 5s he’s been contesting of late, but he’s earned a shot at it courtesy of an authoritative success at Yarmouth in late July.

Tackling Saturday’s trip for the first time, off a mark of 74, the selection powered over two lengths clear of the identically-rated, 6/5 favourite Aulis, who had the rest of the field trailing by nearly four lengths.

That horse went on to frank the form earlier this week, landing a Southwell handicap off an improved mark of 77 in good style.

Looking closer at Across Earth’s formbook, there’s another eye-catching piece of form I want to highlight. At Southwell back in March, he was a narrow runner-up to the then 69-rated Attila The Honey, who was in receipt of almost a stone courtesy of her jockey’s seven-pound claim.

Charlie Johnston’s filly has flourished since, rising to a mark in the high 80s. She’s not always justified that figure, I will admit, but she was second in a decent race at Ascot four starts ago having previously bolted up off 81, so perhaps her recent efforts can be put down to something other than an inflated mark.

Going by his run at Yarmouth – a track which resembles Haydock in many ways – the selection has more to offer over these longer distances. I loved the way he saw out his race having taken up the running much earlier than ideal.

This is a very competitive affair, mind. David Menuisier is enjoying an excellent campaign and his lightly-raced Master Builder, who has William Buick doing the steering for the first time, is a dangerous opponent as the 13:50 Haydock Odds suggests.

I also fear Hutchence and Walter Hartright for Andrew Balding and Ed Dunlop respectively, but I see no reason why Across Earth is double the price of Contacto, who returns from 101 days on the sidelines off a career-high mark of 84.

There’s undoubtedly more likely winners on Saturday afternoon, but at 10/1 this is a standout bet.

My suggestion is to win, but as this is a Super Extra Place Race with 4 available instead of 3 at 1/5 the odds for all each-way bets, I couldn't put anyone off making use of those terms.
