Lucky 15 Tips: I didn’t take too much Persuading

After a solid couple of winners on Wednesday, biblical floods sadly put paid to Thursday's Lucky 15 from Salisbury - and only an hour or so before racing was due to start.

Friday brings a good-looking, open Haydock card with the seven-race action kicking in at 13:25. Cut in the ground is extremely likely at the north-west venue, so stamina can more than play its part in our deliberations. Looks just the kind of day for an each-way play, so without further ado, our Lucky 15 tips for Friday September 6.

Each race I've made a selection in is paying four places each-way, and I'm looking for some value too in the main. What could be slightly testing ground at Haydock therefore leads me as I suggested earlier to be thinking in terms of an each-way play, so that's the direction of travel for Friday.

13:25 - Scottish Reel @ 15/2

Middle-distance handicap for openers, and a three-year-old colt popping over the Pennines from Middleham Moor.

Charlie Johnston trains and after three runs, just one this year 46 days ago, this son of Group 1-winning Highland Reel makes his handicap debut off a modest-looking mark of 67 in a very ordinary Class 5.

In fairness he's shown precious little so far but being so lightly raced, opportunities have been thin on the ground for him to shine. His sire was perfectly fine on good-to-soft, and he's getting weight from every one of his rivals.

He's 'only' got to get in the first four to contribute, and I'm hoping that's within compass. Andrew Mullen is in the plate.

14:00 - Copper Knight @ 11/1

A wonderful old servant, especially up at York.

At 10 years of age Tim Easterby's gelding is still hurtling around and being competitive, and goes with some juice in the deck. I'm hoping he'll race prominently as per, and that legendary gameness will kick in and keep him in the argument.

Many will cry enough late in the piece - I'm hoping all the experience that has brought 15 career wins will stand him in good stead and perhaps he can even add to that majestic tally. Duran Fentiman rides.

15:45 - Knight Templar @ 10/3

The brilliant Tom Marquand has been booked for Robert Stephens' three-year-old Haafhd gelding.

He's only recently arrived from Sir Mark Prescott's yard, and benefitted from a step up in trip 31 days ago for new connections at Ffos Las, winning a Class 6 handicap (1m 4f) by the minimum margin.

Now he gets not only Tom, but another 2f to travel, which could unlock further potential now we know that 6, 7 and 10f trips were probably not bringing out the best in him.

His sire only went 10f but his dam is by Fantastic Light, a strong and quite magnificent mile-and-a-half champion. Fascinated to see if the upward curve can be maintained.

16:20 - Persuasion @ 11/2

Jane Austen fans, of which I'm definitely one, will love seeing this seven-year-old Acclamation gelding.

David and Nicola Barron train this one in North Yorkshire, and he's in an admirably consistent run at the minute without managing to get his head in front. Just a week ago he was beaten 2l in a slightly higher grade at Thirsk and tries again here off the same mark, 87.

He's won at the course previously, handles cut, and is in form. Ticks plenty of boxes for me.
