Sheff Wed vs Leeds Prediction: Thriller at Hillsborough on the cards

Sheffield Wednesday will return to Hillsborough looking to get back to winning ways, after Sunderland hammered them 4-0 at the Stadium of Light. However, it doesn’t get any easier for Danny Rohl’s side, as they host pre-season favourites Leeds United (20:00, Sky Sports Main Event) in what should be a belting Yorkshire derby on Friday night.
Below I’ve taken a look at this gargantuan fixture, and given my Sheff Wed vs Leeds prediction.
Team News
Daniel Farke is coming under pressure already this season after three games in all competitions without a win. His side only managed one shot on target against West Brom, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mateo Joseph drop out of the side in favour of Patrick Bamford, while Brenden Aaronson and Joe Rothwell may also be put into the XI. After a strong defensive showing, the back four is likely to remain unchanged.
Meanwhile, Rohl could make a couple of changes after that disappointing showing in the north-east. Djeidi Gassama may be one name who misses out, with Ike Ugbo pushing for a start, but Barry Bannan and Svante Ingelsson look set to continue their new-found partnership in midfield.
Sheff Wed are priced at 3/1 to win this game, with Leeds available at 8/11 for the three points. A draw can be backed at 5/2, over 2.5 goals is 8/11 and BTTS is 4/6.
Over 2.5 goals @ 8/11
This should be a firecracker of a game. Although Leeds’ last outing was a 0-0 draw with West Brom, that isn’t enough to put me off backing this one to have plenty of goals. Sheff Wed have been entertaining this season, having beaten Plymouth 4-0 on the opening weekend, before losing by the same scoreline against Sunderland.
They also beat Hull 2-1 in the Carabao Cup, while Farke’s men also showed their defensive weakness in that competition as Middlesbrough scored three at Elland Road. There is loads of attacking talent on show here, and Hillsborough will be rocking under the lights. I’m expecting goals.
Sheff Wed to win and BTTS @ 6/1
I think Sheff Wed are being overpriced heading into this game. Yes, they were second-best against Sunderland, and defensively poor, but there were some individual errors that led to the early goals. Dennis Cirkin scored an unmarked header, before Josh Windass gave the ball away in a crucial area for the second, and it was an uphill battle from there.
With Leeds’ high-press, I think they will be able to find the net, but I also back Rohl to get the better of Farke at this moment in time. Things don’t seem quite right at Elland Road right now, and I think Hillsborough’s home crowd will also make a massive difference on Friday night. I think this will be an intense affair, and I think the 6/1 on offer for a home win with both teams to score, is excellent value.
