Do not use owen mcmahon's nap of the day

It's the very first of 32 races on Tuesday that's the subject of my NAP of the Day, as a once-raced filly is taken to get off the mark at the second attempt.

NAP of the Day - Tuesday, August 20

  • 14:10 Kempton - Dancingintherain @ 4/5

One of my main pieces of advice to horse racing novices is to make use of replays. Don't rely solely on race descriptions - trust your eyes first and foremost.

The debut of Saaeed bin Suroor's DANCINGINTHERAIN is a good example as to why. According to the Racing Post, she was "slowly away, in rear, headway from over 2f out, kept on inside final furlong, not pace to challenge". That's a little different to my interpretation.

The daughter of 2018 Derby hero Masar indeed broke poorly and immediately lost several lengths on the pace-setters, but what the aforementioned review fails to mention is how green she was throughout and that her finishing effort was as strong as anything bar the runaway winner.

For me, it fell firmly under the 'promising' bracket. Expect much better next time - and if such improvement does follow, she could be hard to beat in this company.

Of her 12 rivals, all but two have had at least one run and it's Ollie Sangster's 75-rated Loch Leven who sets the standard. Not a particularly good one, mind, with RPRs of 56, 73 and 52 in his three outings to date.

The selection already has the beating of Lady Kilonova on that meeting over course and distance back in July. The latter was almost five lengths behind and didn't show nearly as much promise, so I find it extremely difficult to envisage a form reversal.

I suppose you don't know what's to come from the two newcomers Trad Jazz and Connie Moon, although they hardly scream first-time-out winners, and these two-year-old fillies often improve at wild, unpredictable rates, but this looks a modest affair that shouldn't take much winning.

I'm expecting Dancingintherain to break her duck. Her trainer is in red-hot form, operating at a 33% strike rate with two wins from his last six runners, and the booking of Oisin Murphy is another big positive.

She has plenty in her favour and rates a strong fancy, as the 14:10 Kempton Odds imply.
