Chelmsford city scaled

It’s a routine afternoon and evening across the UK and Ireland on Tuesday with four meetings taking place - three on the flat and one over jumps.

First off is Catterick, before they go at Ffos Las, Roscommon and Chelmsford. Among our horse racing tips on the day is an interesting handicap debutant for trainer Richard Hughes on the all-weather in Essex.

Horse Racing Tips - Tuesday, August 6

  • 14:35 Ffos Las - Boldly @ 9/4
  • 15:25 Catterick - Max Of Stars @ 4/1
  • 20:17 Chelmsford - Top Star @ 7/2

14:35 Ffos Las - Boldly @ 9/4

Racing League handicaps are always competitive and the fact BOLDLY ran so well in one at Yarmouth 12 days ago bodes well for his claims in the 1m6f handicap at Ffos Las.

Boldly has made the frame on all three starts for George Boughey this term and his most recent effort was a career best against seasoned handicappers.

He saw out this 1m6f trip nicely that day and should have more to offer as a stayer given his lightly-raced profile and stout pedigree.

Boldly drops down to a Class 4 and goes off the same mark. He has been knocking on the door and can notch a first career strike under 5lb claim Ned Sangster.

Today's Horse Races

15:25 Catterick - Max Of Stars @ 4/1

Catterick’s 2m handicap looks pretty open, but most of the horses who dominate the market are limited and aren’t open to any improvement. The exception is MAX OF STARS and she gets the vote for Ollie Pears.

The four-year-old is best known as a hurdler (4-12 in that sphere and twice placed in Listed juvenile hurdles last season) and looks at the right of the handicap to make a splash on the Flat.

She has only raced five times in this sphere, but crucially never at a staying distance. She shoots up another five furlongs after going close in a 1m3f Southwell handicap on her most recent Flat outing in March and will appreciate this type of test.

The daughter of Cloth Of Stars likes to front-run and should control this from the outset.

20:17 Chelmsford - Top Star @ 7/2

TOP STAR might have gotten in lightly off a mark of 59 on his handicap debut in the 5f nursery at Chelmsford.

This horse was sent off at odds of 10-1 for a strong Sandown maiden on his debut and his connections even saw fit to book Rossa Ryan for the mount.

Richard Hughes' runner underperformed that day, going off too quickly, and has looked a work in progress in the other novices he has contested.

The 6f experiment didn’t work at Windsor last time, but crucially he has qualified for a mark now, and should be tough to catch in this markedly inferior contest back at the minimum trip if he replicates the early speed he showed on his debut.

Top Star’s dam was plying her trade at Listed level and this son of Starspangledbanner can start living up to his pedigree.
