Football Bet of the Day: Motherwell to seal top spot

Motherwell and Partick Thistle lock horns at Fir Park in the group stage of the Scottish League Cup on Sunday (15:00), with the hosts looking to maintain top spot in Group G in what is the final clash of this stage of the competition.

They have gone unbeaten so far in three matches, winning two of them, while their opponents have won two and lost one. A fascinating encounter looks to be in store and it is from this match that my football bet of the day comes.

As the only Scottish Premiership side in the group, Motherwell were expected to profit from the teams they were drawn to face. So far, things have been going well for them as they are unbeaten after their first three matches and they need only to avoid defeat to top the group and progress to the knockout stage.

Partick Thistle need to win to go through as group winners themselves, but they are in a strong position to go through as one of the three fortunate runners-up thanks to their goalscoring exploits so far.

That is what has me thinking that this should be an intriguing encounter. There is a lot at stake for both teams which immediately adds to the excitement, then there is the fact that Thistle have scored 11 goals in their three outings so far, which may cause some slight concern for Motherwell.

However, I doubt it will cause them too much trouble because they themselves have only conceded two goals in the group stage. I think their defensive structure and organisation will play a huge role in this group decider, and I think it could finally cause the visitors's attacking force to be largely blunted.

With that being said, I don't think they will shut their opponents out. After all, Partick Thistle have been excellent going forward in their previous matches and they will be the toughest team that Motherwell have faced so far.

The hosts need to also be wary of another game going on elsewhere as Clyde have the potential to leapfrog them if they beat Montrose on home soil. Motherwell know that their destiny is in their hands, and they will want to get the job done without anyone else's help.

I fancy them to come out on top here. It's cliche to say that a top-flight side should beat an opponent a division lower, but it certainly plays a part. Their experiences at the higher level should help Motherwell in containing a bright Partick Thistle side, and the home advantage will aid them in their task.

This will certainly be an interesting contrast - the side with the best defensive record against the team with the most goals. I think we will be treated to a few goals here, but I am confident that the Motherwell players will thrive under the pressure and get the victory they need to send them through without any hassle.
