Nine all-weather races on Newcastle’s Tapeta surface, Friday afternoon/early evening, Oct 6th. Action takes place between 16.02 and 20.15.
Frequent raider of the north Hollie Doyle is here, and numbers-wise we’re doing pretty well for runners.
18.45 – Time To Rumble @ 4/1
A Class 6, one mile handicap, for 3-yr-olds and upwards.
The selection Time To Rumble is a Richard Fahey-trained 4-yr-old who ran respectably here at around this time last year. He’ll probably need more to score on Friday. This season he’s won one, at Ayr, off 53, and gone close too. He’s rated 56 today.
His trainer needs little introduction, especially in the north. Oisin Orr has made a great fist of the stable jockey position, and again is on top. The horse is a Night Of Thunder gelding out of an Acclamation mare, and in an ordinary little contest can give us a cracking run for our money, fingers crossed.
19.15 – Carbis Bay @ 2/1
I know the part of the world that this one is named after very well – it’s absolutely glorious. Carbis Bay the horse is a 3-yr-old colt by Siyouni, for whom his son Paddington has flown the family flag so brilliantly this season.
Marco Botti trains, and the excellent Ben Curtis is in the plate. Carbis Bay drops down to a mile here in this Class 5 novice, and after three efforts at further this distance at this stage should be spot on.
Last time at Kempton the petrol tank was empty late in the piece over 1m 3f, and he has time to find his feet, trip, and lay down a marker for the future.
He’s one of the most experienced runners, some of which have yet to see a racecourse. The Gosdens field two, and it’s a cracking, intriguing little heat.
Meanwhile, every time the commentator gives him a namecheck I’ll be thinking about the short but fabulously scenic train journey into St Ives from Carbis ‘station’ (platform). Those awesome beaches, and the sensational blue/green sea to your right taking everyone’s breath en route.
