Sometimes life is like a movie. Very rarely, I grant you, but if you believe in fairytales and want to place your Grand National bet on a back story then this may well be the horse for you.

Latenightpass was a very strong point-to-point horse, and when we saw him start to go over fences, that form didn’t desert him.

Three times he was sent out in the Foxhunters’ at the Grand National Meeting, winning in 2022 having finished as the runner-up in the previous year, and even the fourth-place result last year wasn’t a poor run.

So he knows the course, and trainer Tom Ellis has taken out his professional training licence just to get the chance to send this one out for the big race at the weekend. In doing so, the horse returned from the stable of his best mate Dan Skelton, who has been overseeing his training under rules races this season.

Tom’s wife, Gina Andrews, has been on board Latenightpass in all but two his professional races and is looking forward to her first Grand National ride with a horse who has good form on the course and will be one that gets plenty of column inches in the newspapers and minutes from the talking heads on screen in the build-up.

Two good runs over the Cross Country course at Cheltenham towards the end of last year have certainly built up interest and momentum in this 11-year-old. Last time out on heavy ground at Haydock we certainly didn’t see the best of him, but the back story of the horse that switched late from P2P racing and has impressed so much that his trainer has gone and got a licence to run him in the Grand National is one that could well be a winning formula.
