Mexico and Jamaica get their Copa America campaigns underway in Houston, Texas on Sunday (02:00, Premier Sports 1), pitting the Group B favourites against the section outsiders.

Mexico will be hoping to emulate their team of 1993, who finished runners-up to Argentina, while Jamaica are looking to win their first-ever Copa America contest. Read on for my Mexico vs Jamaica prediction and all the latest team news heading into this contest at the NRG Stadium.

Team News

Experienced performers Guillermo Ochoa, Chucky Lozano, and Raul Jimenez were all left at home by Mexico boss Jaime Lozano. The exciting Santiago Gimenez, who scored 26 goals for Feyenoord this season is set to lead the line for El Tri.

Leon Bailey declined the invitation to represent Jamaica this summer, but Michail Antonio, Bobby Decordova-Reid and Demarai Gray are part of the squad.

Mexico are 4/9 to emerge victorious on Sunday, giving them an implied win probability of 69.2%, while Jamaica are 11/2, or a 15.4% chance, to claim all three points.

The draw can be backed at 3/1, both teams to score at 10/11, and over 2.5 total goals at 4/5.

Double chance - Draw/Jamaica @ 8/5

Mexico have been able to call on some talented squads and gifted individuals in the past, but the current El Tri squad doesn’t look like a vintage crop.

Lozano has certainly opted for a more youthful roster in the United States of America, but with the exceptions of Gimenez and West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez there is a lack of top-level performers.

That lack of quality has been felt in the recent results of El Tri. It’s just four wins in 12 matches for Mexico and that includes losses to the USA and Honduras, as well as draws against Uzbekistan and Australia.

Lozano’s men were beaten 4-0 by Uruguay and 3-2 against Brazil in their final two friendlies before their Copa America campaign began and, while the form of non-competitive matches is flimsy, the overall picture for Mexico is not a positive one.

Jamaica impressed in the Nations League, beating a useful Canada side in the quarter-finals, before taking the USA to extra-time in the semi-finals.

There is talent in the Reggae Boyz’s squad with the likes of Antonio, Gray, Shamar Nicholson, Decordova-Reid and Kasey Palmer in line to start in Houston and it’s hard to see why Jamaica are such a big price to avoid defeat.

Draw or Jamaica - double chance vs Mexico at 8-5

Under 2.5 total goals @ 10/11

Jamaica have conceded only one goal (inside 90 minutes) in their last six matches and Heimir Hallgrímsson’s men can keep things tight against Mexico.

Experienced defender Damion Lowe, will be joined at the back by Michael Hector and Di'Shon Bernard and that trio look strong enough to keep El Tri, who are heavily reliant on Gimenez for goals, at bay.

Under 2.5 total goals in Mexico vs Jamaica at 10-11
