England vs Switzerland

England take on Switzerland in Dusseldorf in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 on Saturday (17:00, BBC One), with the Three Lions reaching this stage by the skin of their teeth. We are still yet to see the pre-tournament favourites live up to expectation and they cannot afford to be subpar here.

The Swiss were convincing winners over Italy last time out and they will be a tough challenge for Gareth Southgate's side. The Three Lions need to find their form quickly here or they will be punished. Read on for my England vs Switzerland prediction, accompanied by match odds and team news.

Team News

England boss Gareth Southgate has a tough call to make as his best-performing defender, Marc Guehi, is unavailable for this clash due to accumulating too many yellow cards. Southgate must choose either Ezri Konsa or Lewis Dunk to partner John Stones, or he could revert to a back three which could include Kyle Walker.

That should be the only forced change for England, while Kobbie Mainoo should keep his place next to Declan Rice in midfield after replacing Conor Gallagher in the lineup for the Slovakia match.

Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka is deemed fit to feature after undergoing scans on a potential adductor issue. Silvan Widmer is set to return at right wing-back  against England after serving a one-game ban during the Italy match.

Head coach Murat Yakin has a decision to make on who will make way for the defender. An alteration involving Michel Aebischer and Fabian Rieder, who played wing-back against Italy, could mean Dan Ndoye or Ruben Vargas are at risk of dropping down to the bench.

Switzerland to win the tie @ 5/4

Apologies England fans but this is where I can see the journey ending. The Three Lions were bailed out by a moment of pure brilliance from Jude Bellignham to take the game to extra-time against Slovakia, but other than that Southgate's men had been poor again.

Slovakia can count themselves unlucky to not be in this quarter-final, and I sense that Switzerland can avenge them. The Swiss were comfortable winners against a woeful Italy side last time out but I have been impressed by their organisation and attacking patterns throughout the tournament.

They play with more fluidity than England and their defence is a more disciplined than the Three Lions'. They have scored in all four matches they have played at the Euros so far and they cannot be underestimated to triumph over this troubled England team.

I have gone for Switzerland to win the tie rather than the match in 90 minutes because England still have the ability to conjure up a goal from nowhere with the attacking players they possess, so we could see them take the game to extra-time again.

I think the Swiss could get the job done in regulation time but I have added this insurance just in case. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this one go all the way.

Switzerland to win the tie at 5/4 Conor Gallagher to be carded @ 6/4

He is likely to start on the bench for this one but Gallagher will likely come on for England if things aren't looking good. One thing Southgate can depend on him for when he is on the pitch is an intense press and aggression.

The Chelsea man has been penalised for five fouls at the tournament so far and has been booked once. I'm expecting him to feature in this fixture in some shape or form and I am confident that he will be very busy out of possession. Against this tricky Swiss side, I think he will be drawn into a few fouls and as such I can see him collecting his second yellow card of the tournament.

Conor Gallagher to be carded at 6/4 Correct score - 1-1 (in 90 minutes) @ 5/1

If I had to give a score prediction for this one in 90 minutes, it would be 1-1. While I see Switzerland winning the tie and being the better side, after what we saw against Slovakia, I cannot discount England coming up with another moment of magic.
