Australia vs Bangladesh Prediction: Marsh to lead from the front

Australia will aim to continue their perfect run at the 2024 T20 World Cup when they face Bangladesh in the Super 8s stage at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Friday morning.

Mitchell Marsh's men have been in blistering form, winning all four Group B matches and carry plenty of momentum into the next phase of the tournament. Bangladesh will be no pushovers though and will take encouragement from having beaten Australia in four of their last six meetings in the shortest format.

The Australian captain has made fitful contributions with the bat in the tournament with his knock of 35 off 25 balls against England representing his best score so far.

It should be no surprise that his best came in the most important match as Marsh has typically been the man for the big occasion during his international career.

He scored crucial runs in the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups, including a special innings of 177 off just 132 balls in Australia's biggest successful tournament chase against Bangladesh last November.

He was in blistering form, smashing 17 fours and 9 sixes in that knock. This kind of confidence and momentum can easily translate into the T20 format.

Adam Zampa has impressed with his control and ability to take wickets in the middle overs out in the West Indies.

Among slow bowlers, only Akeal Hosein for the co-hosts has taken as many wickets at this tournament as the Aussie leg-spinner.

Zampa also enjoyed great success against Bangladesh in the 2021 T20 World Cup, claiming 5-19 in an eight-wicket win.

He will be relishing the chance to bowl on the dry deck at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium after seeing England leggie Adil Rashid tie Oman's batters in knots with a spell of 4-11 off four overs at the same ground last week.

Australia have not posted the highest first-over score of the match in any of their four victories in the West Indies this month.

Oman hit 12 off Mitchell Starc’s first over to double the tally that Australia’s openers had produced from their first six balls, then England took a boundary off the left-armer’s first ball to instantly eclipse the three scored off Moeen Ali’s first set of deliveries.

Australia and Namibia both scored seven runs apiece off the first overs of their match in Antigua before Scotland managed one more than the Aussies got off the first six balls in St Lucia.

Similarly, the Tigers have not posted a higher first-over score than any of their T20 World Cup opponents so far but, of the two likely first-over bowlers, their man is in better form.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib has an economy rate of 4.8 in the tournament, almost half of Starc’s 8.80, while the Australian paceman has a career economy rate of 7.13 against Bangladesh.
