Adam - How slow is this week going?? Sunday is like a dot on the horizon that never seems to get any closer...
After picking my Chiefs to lose in the Championship round, I was of course delighted to be proven wrong, as Kansas City yet again flexed their Super Bowl-winning DNA to see them reach four of the last five finales.
Yes, of course we had the usual tedious conspiracy theories and internet memes regarding the refs being on the Chiefs side but at the end of the day Mahomes & Co. got it done when it mattered.
On Sunday night they line up in New Orleans against a Philadelphia Eagles side that look to be the NFL form horse having dispatched the Packers, Rams and Commanders with ease.
In Saquon Barkley they possess an absolute wrecking ball of a running back, who would have broken all rushing records had he not been sat in their last regular season game and has highlighted what a terrible decision the Giants made in trading him.
A lot of this game will come down to how Steve Spagnuolo and the Kansas defense cope with Barkley's explosive rushing style and this week he has publicly stated that he doesn't know a way to stop Saquon, nor the 'Brotherly Shove' for that matter.
Whilst that may be tongue in cheek, they did find a way to stop Josh Allen's 'tush push' two weeks ago and you suspect that Spags has been cooking something up on the training field to counter the Eagles two biggest threats.
If they do manage to at least contain Barkley, it will come down to a straight shootout between Mahomes and Jalen Hurts and that looks like a battle that will go only one way. After a slow start to the season Mahomes has come to life over the last few months, has cut down on sloppy turnovers and looks back to his best. You also get the feeling that a certain Mr. Travis Kelce may raise his game on the biggest of occasions.
So get your Monday booked off, get those Kendrick Lamar playlists on repeat and sit down and enjoy the unprecedented three-peat happening before your very eyes. It's scripted don't you know ... ;)
Alan - I could change my mind a few more times before I type the killer sentence about who I feel will be lifting the Lombardi at ungodly o'clock UK-time on Monday morning. What's not at issue is that two tremendous sides have made it to this point and if you're dead-set determined that you know 100% how it's going to play out, I take my hat off to you.
Let's look back to Super Bowl LVII. It's only a couple of years ago, and featured these two in a classic. KC took it 38-35, but it's worth reminding ourselves of Eagles' QB Jalen Hurts' contribution.
He rushed for 70 yards across 15 carries for three TDs; and threw over 300 yards (one TD). Imagine doing all that in the big one and still ending up on the losing side?
KC found a way to win, even against such a virtuoso Hurts performance. They've done that a few times since, and chase this historic three-peat as a battle-hardened, teak-tough big match outfit brilliantly coached by Andy Reid, enjoying the Indian summer of 'em all in his storied coaching career.
As for the Eagles, they have a nuclear weapon right now that didn't feature back in Glendale Arizona on that thrilling day. A 27-year-old running back evidently in the absolute prime of his career by the name of Saquon Barkley.
The Bronx-born, Pennsylvania-educated Barkley enjoyed a record-breaking college career before becoming a Giant, second overall pick, 2018 draft. He's had to contend with injuries, unsurprisingly in his most attritional of positions, but his quality shone through in an ordinary team.
There was a rather off-colour parting of the ways in March of last year when he signed for the Eagles and quite frankly he's been a sensation, two rushing TDs and a receiving TD on debut in a convincing win against the Packers nicely setting the tone.
I've devoted a few column inches on number 26 because I feel he can be the difference between now and 2023. Hurts remains - and is outstanding. KC are a formidable opponent, chase history, and will be brilliant. But I'm thinking Philadelphia can edge it courtesy of this generational talent at RB.
Whoever you've got, sit back and enjoy the ride. It's going to be another epic.
Jonny - I said similar when KC took on the San Francisco 49ers in last year's Super Bowl, I can't bet against Andy Reid and this Chiefs team. Much like last term, the Chiefs haven't been that great for long spells of the season, but yet again find themselves in the Super Bowl.
The Chiefs have the chance to secure NFL immortality, and I can't see the likes of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce failing to show up in what is undoubtedly the biggest game of this dynastic run, given what's at stake.
Of course, it would be foolish to write off Philly, especially given the season Saquon Barkley has had. The 2023 showpiece between the sides was closely-fought, ending in a narrow 38-35 triumph for Kansas City, and the Eagles still have the battle scars to show for it. They'll be desperate to go one better here, and with that experience behind them, maybe they can get over the line?
I'm expecting a big performance from the Eagles, but I just have this feeling that we'll see Mahomes and co. at their very best here, when it matters most.
Neil - Looking at what my colleague Jonny has written above, that first line sticks out. Betting against Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes has not been a profitable plan of action over their time together. They are already one of the greatest Head Coach/Quarterback combinations of all time and they potentially have several more years together. Heck, even their State Farm Commercials are pretty good - particularly the one where Coach Reid is trying to steal his QB's chicken nuggets.
Yet having said all of that. I'm picking Philly on Sunday. It isn't all about #26 but let's be honest, he is the biggest difference-maker on either sideline and when a team has a home run threat on every snap, it does change the way you view games.
Kansas City have some wonderful receivers and good running backs but they aren't a quick strike team. Saquon Barkley has scored from 60 yards or more seven times this season. No-one in the history of the game has done it more than four times. Every time he gets his hands on the ball and a sliver of space, he can go the distance.
Philly have an offensive line who can dominate the line of scrimmage and give their star a chance to shine but with that creates opportunities elsewhere. Jalen Hurts is one of the best runners with the ball in his hands as well, so defenses have to account for him and if he can be accurate with the ball, the likes of DeVonta Smith, AJ Brown and Dallas Goedart can make plays.
The Eagles though aren't all about the offense. Defensively they've put up stellar numbers all season and Jalen Carter is on the verge of being a bonafide star in this league. The former Georgia Bulldog willed his team to hold on against LA in the snow with that massive sack on 3rd down as the Rams looked poised to break Philly's hearts.
This on paper should be a great game and going against Kansas City has been a notoriously poor move betting-wise but I just like the Eagles to get it done. Give me Saquon to be voted Super Bowl MVP to cap off one of the greatest seasons ever seen by a running back as a final bet to play for Sunday's game.
