The NBA returns tonight with an eight-game slate, with the Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors all in action.

It's been a while, but I've picked out a treble that pays 5/1 for Thursday's action. Read on for my NBA betting tips for Thursday, January 9.

NBA Betting Tips - Thursday, January 9

  • Detroit Lions vs Golden State Warriors - Warriors on moneyline @ 5/4
  • Orlando Magic vs Minnesota Timberwolves - Timberwolves on moneyline @ 1/2
  • Los Angeles Lakers vs Charlotte Hornets - Lakers (-8.5) @ 10/11

Treble pays 5.44/1

Detroit Pistons vs Golden State Warriors - Warriors on moneyline @ 5/4

The Warriors are looking to end their losing streak here against a Pistons team that have won seven of their last eight encounters.

Going off the form book, you'd naturally side with Detroit, but Golden State can exploit the Pistons' defence of the three-point shot here. The Pistons have allowed teams to make an average of 14.1 threes per game, which is the fifth-most in the NBA.

The Warriors take and make the fourth-most threes per game in the league. They want to beat teams from beyond the arc, and there is a chance for them to do just that here.

Detroit Pistons vs Golden State Warriors - Moneyline Golden State Warriors

Odds correct at time of publishing.

Orlando Magic vs Minnesota Timberwolves - Timberwolves on moneyline @ 1/2

This game is set to be a cracker, and it can be watched live on TNT Sports 1.

Anthony Edwards has done the majority of the heavy lifting for Minnesota in the past week, dropping 122 points over his last three games, capped off by a dominant 32-point showing in last night’s win over the Pelicans.

For all of Edwards' heroics, Minnesota are still teetering on the edge of play-off contention, and this is a chance to secure a much-needed win against a Magic team that have been struck by the injury bug.

It may be foolish to write off a depleted Orlando team, as the Timberwolves have a bad habit of playing down to their competition. Losses to teams like Portland, Toronto, and Detroit are painful reminders of what happens when they take their foot off the gas.

However, Minnesota's defence should be enough to secure the win, as they allow an average of 107.7 points per game, which is the fourth-lowest in the NBA.

Los Angeles Lakers vs Charlotte Hornets - Lakers (-8.5) @ 10/11

The Lakers are looking to make it three wins from three on their home court when they host the Charlotte Hornets tonight.

LA will be hoping to bounce back from a disappointing defeat to a short-handed Dallas outfit last time out, meanwhile Charlotte managed to get the better of Phoenix in their most recent outing.

The Hornets are languishing near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, and they have an overreliance on star guard LaMelo Ball. In fact, they depend on Ball's brilliance so much that they rank second to last in the league in points average per game at 106.1.

In theory, if the Lakers keep Ball quiet, they should have enough to get back to winning ways - and by a large margin.

Los Angeles Lakers vs Charlotte Hornets - Point Spread Los Angeles Lakers (-8.5)
