After a gruelling campaign, the 2023/24 NBA season has reached its conclusion, as the Eastern Conference champions, the Boston Celtics, take on the Western Conference winners, the Dallas Mavericks, in the NBA Finals.

This is the first postseason meeting between the two franchises, as Boston look to secure a record-breaking 18th title - and their first since 2008 - while the Mavs seek a second championship to join the iconic 2011 victory which was spearheaded by Dirk Nowitzki. My NBA betting tips for Thursday will focus on a highly-anticipated game one.

NBA Betting Tips - Thursday, June 6

  • Boston Celtics -6.5 vs Dallas Mavericks @ 10/11
  • Over 215.5 points @ 10/11

Today's NBA Odds

Boston finished the regular season with the NBA's best offence and third-best defence, continuing that form into the postseason. The C's have breezed through every match-up so far, however, the Eastern Conference is generally seen as the weaker of the two, leaving question marks over just how battle-tested these Celtics really are.

The Mavericks left it late to get their act together, finishing the season on a 16-4 run to rise to the fifth seed in the West, after flirting with the play-in tournament places for the majority of the campaign. They outclassed the Los Angeles Clippers and battled past the Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves to reach this stage, and make for a pretty ferocious underdog heading into this series.

Boston Celtics -6.5 vs Dallas Mavericks @ 10/11

The fact that the Mavericks open the NBA Finals as the underdog will be nothing new to them, and I believe all the pressure is on the Celtics to perform after their cakewalk through the Eastern Conference.

However, the C's had the best record in the league at the end of the regular season, and their home court advantage is arguably the best in the NBA. Kristaps Porzingis, who's missed the last 10 matches through injury, is expected to feature here which only strengthens Boston on both ends of the floor.

Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic will be hoping to win this game (and series) in the backcourt after emerging as one of the most potent one-two punches in the league this postseason, but Boston should have enough to contain at least one of them effectively.

The Celtics won the two regular-season meetings by nine and 28 points respectively, but I expect the games to be much closer in the NBA Finals. I'm still going to take Boston on the spread here, given the home court advantage they've got at their disposal.

Boston Celtics -6.5 at 10-11

Over 215.5 points @ 10/11

I'm surprised that the points total is so low here, as these offences are two of the most efficient in the league.

The opening game in any series in the play-offs is likely to be a feel-out game, but I'm expecting Boston to come out strong and set the pace early doors.

In general, recent contests between these two franchises have been high-scoring with an average of 220.3 points-per-game scored in the last 10 meetings.

Dallas have some answers to slow down the Boston offence, but the C's are far too talented going forward, so I'm taking the over on the points total.

Over 215.5 total points at 10-11
