Baseball

This already-incredible MLB postseason could not be tighter. For the first time in history, all four Division Series match-ups are tied at 1-1 after two games. But on Tuesday the National League ties must go one way or the other (live on TNT Sports 1 from 22:00 BST).

The New York Mets host the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Los Angeles Dodgers go to San Diego to meet the Padres, and here are my MLB Betting Tips.

MLB Postseason Betting Tips - Tuesday, October 8

  • Mets v Phillies: First 5 innings Tie and Under 3.5 Runs @ 13/2
  • Padres -2.5 @ 11/5

Today’s MLB Odds

NL Division Series Game 3: Philadelphia Phillies @ New York Mets Odds (22:08 BST)

The Mets finally return to Citi Field after an extraordinary week on the road.

They clinched a play-off berth in Atlanta, then overcame the Brewers in Milwaukee in the Wild Card round before heading to Philadelphia to split the first two games with the Phillies.

And there looks set to be more intense drama in Game 3, with Betfred finding it difficult to split these two. The Mets are 20/21 to take the edge in the series, with the Phillies 20/23.

NL Division Series Game 3: Los Angeles Dodgers @ San Diego Padres Odds (02:08 BST Wednesday)

The star-studded Dodgers were brought down a peg or two in Game 2, giving up six home runs to a dominant Padres batting lineup.

That has given the series a different sheen, especially off the back of the various beefs emanating from that fractious 10-2 Friars win on Sunday.

And there ought to be a momentous night ahead at Petco Park, with the wonderful atmosphere there set to be heightened given the bad blood between the two clubs.

It is the Padres who have been made favoured as they go behind Michael King. The home side are 4/6, with Dave Roberts’ Dodgers available at 6/5, which implies 45.5% probability of an LA victory.

Mets v Phillies: 1st 5 Innings Tie and Under 3.5 Runs @ 13/2

With the Mets sending out Sean Manaea and the Phillies having Aaron Nola on the mound, this one could be a proper pitching duel.

Sure, this is a series which has featured lots of runs and even more twists, but I reckon any replica of those escapades will be saved for late in the day.

In the first two games, there has been a grand total of just three runs thus far, with two homers breaking the early-inning seal – Kyle Schwarber’s lead-off first-inning blast in Game 1, and Mark Vientos’ two-run dinger in the third on Sunday.

Given the two guys being handed the ball, I think this will be a cagey encounter until the later innings.

So I’m taking a chance as I look for value, and the 13/2 for the tie after five innings with 3.5 or fewer runs looks tasty. That gives us a 0-0 or 1-1 scoreline after five frames for the win.

Padres -2.5 @ 11/5

Jurickson Profar didn’t just troll Dodgers fans with his catch to deny Mookie Betts a homer on Sunday.

While his understated celebration had the home fans initially believing they were in business, the Padres supporters were falling further in love with their team’s swagger.

The fall-out from Game 2 is set to colour the rest of this series, with the Dodgers’ fans behaviour later in the evening and the war of words between Jack Flaherty and Manny Machado helping to stir up this rivalry some more.

But I think the Padres will love that. They’re a team that plays with real heart, and they face a Dodgers outfit many expected to win the World Series from the moment Shohei Ohtani penned his 10-year deal last December.

Machado, Profar, Fernando Tatis and rookie Jackson Merrill are just the start of the Friars’ threats on offence, and I think they get ahead in the series with a few runs to spare against a starter in Walker Buehler who has really struggled in 2024. At 11/5, the -2.5 handicap bet is good value.
