Vito Mielnicki Jr. vs Connor Coyle Fight Preview

New Jersey’s Mielnicki is going about his work in a measured, sometimes thankless, way. He is moving up the rankings, having hit the WBO top 10. The former Golden Gloves champ has held youth and regional WBC titles. It is not the sort of approach that kicks the door down, but one that often gets its just rewards in the end.

Mielnicki’s ledger is not littered with star names, but he has beaten the people he is supposed to prevail over. Mexican Jose Charles had been in with ex-world king Austin Trout before getting knocked out by our subject. Hot middleweight prospect Yoenli Hernandez would stop him later too. Ronald Cruz had taken Xander Zayas, who appears on this card, the distance. Mielnicki beat him on points also.

Mielnicki is matching his middleweight rivals rather than surpassing them just yet. But an impressive showing against the unblemished Irishman in the opposite corner, under the weighty and historic shadow of MSG, could just do it.

Coyle is another of boxing’s quietly impressives. The 34-year-old incongruously nicknamed ‘The Kid’ is from Derry, the same town as a former New York hero. John Duddy never captured a world title, but he captured the hearts of the Big Apple during the first decade of this century. Duddy boxed nine times at the Garden, forging a huge following among the huge Irish community in New York.

Don’t be surprised if a few of those old heads are in attendance and making some serious noise for the underdog here. Coyle is yet to box in New York as a pro, but he is a well-known face on the circuit Stateside. This will be his 17th US fight, with further outings coming in Ireland, Mexico and last time out at Oakwell Stadium in Barnsley.

This unusual dichotomy of experiences makes Coyle a dangerous fighter. He has fought in different environments against a wide range of opposition. The NABA middleweight belt he holds has fired him up to third-place in the WBA rankings. This is a live underdog with everything to gain.

Vito Mielnicki Jr vs Connor Coyle - Method Of Victory Mielnicki Jr on Points

Odds correct at time of publishing.

A win for either man would give them a strong foothold in a wide open division. The belts are spread between unbeaten phenom Janibek Alimkhanuly (IBF and WBO), ageless wonder Erislandy Lara (WBA) and destructive Dominican Carlos Adames (WBC).

Beneath them there is a dearth of truly massive names. Chris Eubank Jr. is the biggest and a win over Conor Benn this spring will strengthen his claim. Another famous boxing progeny, Shane Mosley Jr., is making some waves. But there is ample room for either Mielnicki or Coyle to elbow their way in.

That is the fun of fights like this. It is two men bringing something into battle. Both not used to losing. Both venturing a part of themselves to strive for greatness. Boxing, eh?

Vito Mielnicki Jr. vs Connor Coyle Prediction

I love this fight. Which makes it hard for me to pick, as I usually gravitate to a nice, well-matched contest. But let’s have a go.

Mielnicki has mixed at a slightly higher level than his opponent. Coyle has fought some hard opponents, but usually ones who haven’t mixed with bigger names. Mielnicki’s scalps have often been battle-tested against the best.

Coyle also isn’t a big hitter. His nine knockouts from 21 wins should not strike much fear. Mielnicki has a slightly healthier 12 from 20 victories. He does have the only loss of the pair, but that came all the way back in 2021. Mielnicki is a different fighter now.

It is this different fighter who will have his hand raised on Friday. I’m going for Mielnicki on points at 5/6.
