Tennis Betting Tips: Fernandez and Williams to wow crowds again

We're into the second week of the US Open, with the last 16 kicking off on Monday in all disciplines.

Below are Monday's Tennis Betting Tips, featuring one match from the Men's Singles and a couple from the Women's Doubles...

Set Betting - Alex de Minaur (AUS) 3-0 vs Leandro Riedi (SWI) @ 3/5

World No. 8 Alex de Minaur has breezed through to the last 16 of this year's US Open, beating fellow Aussie Christopher O'Connell (6-3, 6-4, 6-4) and Japanese counterpart Shintaro Mochizuki (6-2, 6-4, 6-2) in straight sets before meeting Daniel Altmaier in the third round. He benefitted from the German's retirement in the fourth set (6-7, 6-3, 6-4), but was already on his way to the next stage of the tournament.

The 26-year-old has been afforded a kind draw in the last 16, as Leandro Riedi is one of just five unseeded players left, and at 435th, is by far the lowest-ranked.

Riedi easily overcame Spaniard Pedro Martinez (6-4, 6-2, 6-3) in the first round, but only edged past Argentine Francisco Cerundolo (3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2) in the second, requiring a heroic comeback to set up a third-round match with Pole Kamil Majchrzak, who was forced to retire at 5-3 down in the first set.

As a result, Riedi may be well rested ahead of his tie with De Minaur, but his top-10 opponent has only played nine full sets himself so far in Flushing Meadows.

In theory, this should be a routine victory for De Minaur, who usually fares well against lower-ranked players; he's lost just three times since suffering a straight-sets defeat to Jiri Lehecka (4-6, 2-6) at Queen's on June 17, and two of his three losses have been to Novak Djokovic (6-1, 4-6, 4-6, 4-6) and Ben Shelton (3-6, 4-6), two higher-ranked players, at Wimbledon and the Canadian Open, respectively.

De Minaur holds an unbeaten record against non-top-200 players at majors, while this match will be his Swiss opponent's first-ever with a top-10 player.

I'm backing De Minaur to get the job done with the minimum of fuss on Monday.

Set Betting - Sara Errani (ITA)/Jasmine Paolini (ITA) 2-0 vs Fanny Stollar (HUN)/Fang-Hsien Wu (TAI) @ 5/6

Moving to the Women's Doubles, Italian pair Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini take on Hungarian Fanny Stollar and her Taiwanese partner Fang-Hsie Wu in the last 16.

Errani, who collected her 36th doubles title at the US Open last week, winning the mixed event alongside Andrea Vavassori, is back on the title hunt alongside Paolini. Both are ranked joint-fourth in the doubles rankings, and have been a successful pairing over the last few years, notably winning gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics and triumphing at the French Open earlier this year.

They've lost just four of their last 25 contests as a duo, and are yet to drop a set at this year's US Open, beating Lois Boisson and Tatjana Maria (6-3, 7-5) and McCartney Kessler and Peyton Stearns (6-4, 6-1).

Their opponents on Monday, Stollar and Wu, have been flawless so far, too, overcoming the challenges of Irina Khromacheva and Kamilla Rakhimova (7-5, 6-1), and Miyu Kato and Renata Zarazua (6-3, 6-2).

Stollar and Wu are much less experienced as a pair than Errani and Paolini, though, only teaming up together for the first time in Cincinnati earlier this month, and followed their straight-sets defeat there with another in Cleveland before pitching up in New York.

Errani and Paolini are likely to post a much tougher test than those Stollar and Wu have previously encountered, and with Paolini knocked out of the singles event last week, her full focus is now on doubles, spelling danger for her Monday opponents.

Match Betting - Leylah Fernandez/Venus Williams to beat Ekaterina Alexandrova (Wrl)/Shuai Zhang (CHI) @ 5/4

The Venus Williams show goes on, as the legendary American prepares for a last-16 meeting with Ekaterina Alexandrova and Shuai Zhang in the Women's Doubles on Monday, alongside partner Leylah Fernandez.

Williams and Fernandez, aged 45 and 22, respectively, are at the opposite ends of their careers, and only linked up for the first time last week, but have already forged a solid partnership, beating Lyudmyla Kichenok and Ellen Perez (7-6, 6-3), and Ulrikke Eikeri and Eri Hozumi (7-6, 6-1) in the first and second round, respectively.

Alexandrova and Zhang first established a partnership in 2023, and have seen off the challenges of Jaqueline Cristian and Angelica Moratelli (6-2, 6-2), and Katie Boulter and Sonay Kartal (6-4, 3-6, 6-4), but will now be under huge pressure against Fernandez and Williams, who will enjoy the full support of the crowd in their last-16 match.

Fernandez has been the superior player in the partnership so far, as you'd expect given she's a top-30 singles player, but we've seen flashes of brilliance from Williams, too, and I'm backing the Canadian and American make it to the quarter-finals.

Alexandrova's main focus is her singles match with Iga Swiatek earlier on Monday, so she may be weary for her doubles match later on, and Williams and Fernandez can take full advantage.
