Roland Garros French Open Tennis

French Open top seed Novak Djokovic has a big chance to make a stout defence of his Roland Garros singles crown, but age may finally be catching up with the Serb.

While three-time clay-court champion Djokovic won’t be unhappy to have avoided modern-day luminaries Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the draw - he cannot meet either player until the final - the way things have been going we could still witness a shootout between the younger stars in the semi-finals and the victor would be a warm favourite to go on and lift his first French Open singles crown as an adult.

Below you can find my men's French Open 2024 predictions and the latest odds.

  • Carlos Alcaraz to win title @ 5/2
  • Francisco Cerundolo each-way to win title (1/2, 2 places) @ 125/1

Carlos Alcaraz to win title @ 5/2

Jannik Sinner has looked a major threat to all and sundry in his previous efforts at the French Open, but while the Italian looks a surefire winner of the Roland Garros title one day he will do well to match the tally of Parisian clay titles that is likely to come the way of Carlos Alcaraz.

It has yet to happen for the Spanish former world number one at the second Grand Slam of the year, but it’s unlikely to be long before Alcaraz figures out what it takes to go all the way there.

Of course, he’s highly unlikely to get close to the record of his legendary compatriot Rafael Nadal on clay - the Majorcan has won an incredible 14 singles crowns in Paris and bids to extend that total in the coming fortnight.

But Alcaraz has all the weapons needed for success on the Parisian clay courts - he just needs it to click and when it does, the vast majority of the field will only be able to sit back and admire the spectacle.

Thus far in his career, Alcaraz has tended to dominate on clay in tournaments in his homeland. He has twice captured titles in the Madrid Masters and in Barcelona but has yet to click at Roland Garros and in the Monte Carlo and Rome Masters.

That pattern is a bit of mystery, but Alcaraz has shown by winning Wimbledon and the US Open that he is perfectly capable of winning on the road and it’s unlikely to be long before he shines at those other clay tournaments.

He and Sinner have had issues with injury in 2024, but the fact that both players are in the field this year can be viewed as a positive and, while Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud have definite opportunities to lift the Musketeers’ Trophy in Paris this year, that trio will do well to stop a physically fit Alcaraz or Sinner.

Francisco Cerundolo each-way to win title (1/2, 2 places) @ 125/1

With Alcaraz and Sinner both ensconced in the bottom half of the French Open draw, each-way backers may be better off focusing on the top half, where Novak Djokovic is no certainty to deliver the goods the way he did in his pomp.

As well as Djokovic, the top half of the draw features Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Ruud and any of those single-figure seeds could mop up should the 37-year-old Serb come up short this year.

As well as that trio, Alex de Minaur, Karen Khachanov and Taylor Fritz are also capable of threatening, but instead, for a second outright interest, it may be worth taking a chance on Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo coming up trumps in a Grand Slam for the first time.

His compatriots in his half of the draw, Tomas Etcheverry and Mariano Navone, aren’t without hope, but Cerundolo possesses the physical strength to prosper in long matches on clay and there may just be a bit more of an opening available this year with doubts surrounding Djokovic’s ability to plough on at Grand Slam level on clay.
