It is time for the first combined WTA and ATP 1000 event of 2024 this week as the Indian Wells Open gets underway for another season.

The main draw begins on Wednesday and the men's competition in particular is intriguing with big guns Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal both returning to the fray. But with the likes of Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev also involved, it is sure to be a competitive event.

Despite having not played at the event in five years, Djokovic is 7/4 favourite to win the ATP BNP Paribas Open with Sinner next in the betting at 3/1. Alcaraz is a 4/1 shot, while Medvedev is double that price at 8/1.

There is then an even bigger jump to Alexander Zverev at 25/1, the same price as dark horse De Minaur, while returning Nadal is 33/1.

There really has been no better player on the ATP tour this season than Italian hotshot Sinner, who is the best bet to go the distance at Indian Wells.

Djokovic is a five-time champion in the Californian competition but has not competed there since 2019 and last lifted the trophy in 2016.

Nadal, meanwhile, has been out of action for some time and will likely just be pleased to be involved after a long time away from the courts.

Defending champion Alcaraz has struggled for form in 2024, struggling to make much of an impact in South America in the Argentina Open and Rio Open.

The young Spaniard was also dumped out of the Australian Open at the quarter-final phase and is worth swerving.

Medvedev, last season's runner-up, will also be eager to make his mark but the draw has been pretty unkind to him with Nadal joining him in his quarter along with Sebastian Korda, Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune.

So Sinner is the man to side with, having gone unbeaten in his first 12 matches of the season.

As part of that run, he claimed his first ever Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and also came out on top at the ATP Rotterdam.

He enjoyed a decent finish to 2023 and has carried that through to this season and he can capitalise on a softer draw than his competitors to win the Indian Wells Masters.

There are reasons to take on all of the big-hitters apart from Sinner and that suggests punters may also want to consider a bigger-priced option.

With that in mind, Alex de Minaur could be worth consideration.

The Australian has also made a strong start to 2024, most recently winning the Mexican Open.

En route to the title, he enjoyed wins over Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jack Draper and Casper Ruud and he is no stranger to taking down big guns.

De Minaur also reached the final of the ATP Rotterdam and made the fourth round of the Australian Open.

The fiercest player in his quarter is Alcaraz but the Spaniard's form has been questionable and De Minaur could well win the section and represents a great outright pick.
