There is unlikely to be a more beloved Gold medal handed out in Budapest for Team GB than the one Katarina Johnson-Thompson earned for winning the Heptathlon on Sunday evening. The now two-time winner of this event, having won back in 2019 in Doha, is one of the most well-known members of the squad. Many fans of athletics have followed her ups and downs throughout the years. So when she kept Anna Hall close enough in the 800 metres to emerge victorious, it immediately became of the best feel good moments of the year sporting wise.

That win has moved KJT firmly into SPOTY contention and Betfred has priced up the Liverpudlian as 2/1 second-favourite just behind Ashes hero Stuart Broad. The right-handed bowler announced his retirement from all form of cricket during the series and became the only player in Test match history to hit the last ball he faced for six in addition to taking a wicket with his final delivery. With Strictly rumours still floating around, the 13/8 offered is not a surprise.

Another sportsman who has hung it up is jockey Frankie Dettori and surprisingly the Italian has never actually won this trophy. His career has been primarily based in the UK and he made the podium all the way back in 1996. He’s extremely popular and will get plenty of support from the whole of his sport to give him a mighty fine send off. No surprise that he’s 4/1 and very much considered in the mix.

The Lionesses may not have ultimately won it all Down Under but goalkeeper Mary Earps has won over legions of supporters with her stellar displays in between the sticks. A penalty save in the final could have been the turning point but alas it was not to be. With Nike refusing to make her replica shirt (for some unknown reason) she’ll continue to be in the news going forward. You can back her at 12/1 alongside Ben Stokes. The England cricket captain was the favourite until Broad’s retirement but he still has an opportunity with the World Cup after announcing he’s coming out of retirement to play.

All five of the favourites as of August 22 are certainly well worth considering in what should be one of the most competitive markets for this event for years.
