When I refer to a "match player," I mean a snooker player who not only can win when performing at their peak, but, more significantly, still manages to win even when not playing their best.
The story of the week so far!
It remains unclear whether the unprecedented number of maximum 147 breaks achieved this season has influenced World Snooker Tour’s decision to implement what are the tightest pockets in recent memory for this week’s event.
Nonetheless, the increased difficulty appears to have elevated the standard of competition, with Neil Robertson and Shaun Murphy joining the other two semi-finalists.
The notably narrow pockets along the cushion rails have significantly altered break-building strategies, following extensive criticism during the International Championship in China, where the pockets were described as overly generous.
What makes a match player?
A relentless drive to win at any cost is best exemplified by those rare performers who consistently show their opponents equal respect, no matter the situation.
Indeed, that has been the case this season for Judd Trump who has endured a dry spell since winning last year’s UK Championship. Despite a dip in form since switching cues, the Bristol player has consistently reached the later stages of major tournaments, though his confidence has wavered against top competitors.
If he wins today, he will join Steve Davis, Stephen Hendry, and Ronnie O’Sullivan in an elite group. A victory would mark Trump’s third UK Championship and sixth triple crown, highlighting his exceptional match play even when not at his best.
Mark Selby’s name is always at the forefront when discussing match players; much like John Higgins before him, Selby thrives on sensing any weakness in his opponent. He has a knack for snatching unlikely frames and breaking his rival's spirit.
This week, Selby has displayed dominant form, carrying momentum from his Champion of Champions victory. It may also have helped that he skipped the Saudi event between these tournaments, giving “The Jester from Leicester” a notable advantage compared to Trump.
How do Trump and Selby match up?
Over the course of their careers, the rivalry between Judd and Selby has shifted as expected. In recent years, as Judd has established himself as World No. 1, he has frequently outperformed Selby with his aggressive playing style, challenging the Leicester player. This approach, used effectively by both Judd and Jack Lisowski, has worked well against Selby.
Recently, Selby has regained momentum, defeating Trump 10-5 in the Champion of Champions final after also winning against him in the Shanghai Masters quarter-final earlier this season.
Remarkably, the Champion of Champions final was the first time they played in a final since the 2011 China Open which Trump won 10-8.
The recent shift in competitive dynamics may be attributed to Trump adopting a strategic approach like Selby’s in recent years. However, Trump now faces greater difficulty in decisively outperforming Selby compared to previous encounters. This situation inherently favours Selby, particularly considering that the Leicester player is currently exhibiting stronger form and consistency, while Trump's performance appears to be hampered by uncertainty.
Conclusion - and bets
Mark Selby faced a serious challenge to his confidence during last night’s semi-final when Shaun Murphy fought back from 4-1 down and trailing by 40 points, narrowing the score to 4-3. Selby, however, responded like a true champion, which should further boost his self-assurance.
Betfred offers enticing odds of 1/1 for those considering Selby as a slight underdog in today’s UK Championship. In this best-of-19-frame matchup, it is also worth looking at the odds for Selby to achieve the highest break as an underdog, priced at 21/20.
The two finalists have shown different form leading up to the final. Mark Selby has demonstrated excellent break building by scoring four centuries and sixteen breaks over 50 in his last four matches. Judd Trump, by comparison, has also made sixteen breaks over 50 but only managed two centuries.
If Selby secures the victory, he will be able to extend his lead in break-building stats over Trump.
