The quarter-finals in the bottom half of the European Masters will be decided on Friday and there is one last-16 clash that particularly stands out, as Barry Hawkins takes on Luca Brecel.
Elsewhere, Lyu Haotian goes up against David Gilbert, Mark Selby takes on Ashley Hugill and Noppon Saengkham faces off with Jimmy Robertson for a place in the last eight.
It promises to be another enthralling day’s action at the Kia Metropol Arena, Nuremberg and we have picked out two betting tips for the remaining last-16 ties.
European Masters Snooker 2023 Tips – Friday 25 August, 2023
Barry Hawkins to beat Luca Brecel @ 11/10
Barry Hawkins has suffered a fall from grace over the last 12 months but his performances over the first couple of rounds in Germany suggest he is back on the rise again.
The former World Championship finalist overcame James Cahill 5-3 in the opening round before thrashing Zak Surety 5-1 to book a last-16 tie with reigning Crucible champion Luca Brecel.
It has not been such an easy ride for the Belgian Bullet over his opening two matches, as he edged past India’s Ishpreet Singh Chadha 5-3 before needing a final-frame decider to beat Robbie Williams 5-4.
Hawkins, who lost in the final of this event in the 2022/23 season, leads the head-to-head against Brecel 3-2 and the Englishman looks like the value play at 11/10 to reach the quarter-finals.
David Gilbert to beat Lyu Haotian 5-4 @ 11/2
David Gilbert is another player that has struggled for form over the last 12 months or so and he only managed to reach the quarter-final stage of a tournament in the 2022/23 season once.
However, the Englishman has shown some positive signs over the first two rounds, beating Reanne Evans 5-1 before scraping past Ben Mertens 5-4.
While there are certainly positives to take from those two performances, there are still areas of his game that need to improve and he may be in for the long haul against Lyu Haotian.
The Chinese has dispatched Elliot Slessor and Andy Hicks to reach the last 16, recording 5-4 victories in both of those contests, and Friday’s clash with Gilbert looks like it could go down to a final-frame decider.
It is one win apiece between Gilbert and Haotian, with the most recent meeting going the distance, and there is just a feeling the Englishman may have the edge to run out a 5-4 victor.
