Next up on the snooker calendar is the Champion of Champions. One of the most prestigious tournaments on the tour since it was revived in 2013 with all the Champions of WST events from the last 12 months competing for the title.
The event has been dominated by big names since its return, with Ronnie O’Sullivan picking up the trophy last year for the fourth time.
Mark Allen to win Outright 1pt - 9/1
Mark Allen opens the event with a match against World Seniors Champion Jimmy White tomorrow afternoon and he is my first outright pick for this one.
Allen is yet to reach the heights he managed last season but this is an event he’s always enjoyed - in his last 6 attempts he’s reached the semi-finals on five occasions, going on to reach the final twice and lifting the trophy once.
Assuming he beats Jimmy in the first round as he’s heavily expected to do so, he’ll face the winner of Mark Selby and Ali Carter, and these two could easily face a long, drawn out battle in the afternoon, whilst Allen waits and prepares to play the winner tomorrow evening.
Luca Brecel to win Outright 1pt - 14/1
Group 2 sees Mark Williams take on Robert Milkins, whilst World Champion Luca Brecel takes on Barry Hawkins. Brecel is my 2nd pick in the outrights, but he hasn’t been brilliant in ranking events this season. However, he’s a player who seems to enjoy the limelight.
The most prestigious event he’s entered so far this season was the Shanghai Masters and he rose to the occasion there beating Williams, Milkins and Robertson on the way to the final, where he was beaten narrowly by Ronnie.
When Brecel hits form he can be unplayable as he showed at the Crucible beating Mark Williams, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Selby on his way to lift the trophy, and odds of 14/1 to win just four matches this week look good value to me.
