Everyone’s second team at the 2023 World Cup, Fiji, are back in action on Saturday when they take on Georgia at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux.

The Flying Fijians blew Pool C wide open with their famous 22-15 victory over Australia in Saint Etienne and now they have their fate in their own hands as they prepare to face Georgia and Portugal in their last two games.

As for Georgia, an 18-18 draw with Portugal scuppered any faint hopes they could cause a shock and reach the knockouts for the first time in their history.

The Georgians will be looking for a response, but are likely to be up against it, with Fiji set to be brimming with confidence after downing the Wallabies.

Fiji are the firm favourites going into this one at 1/16, with Georgia at 8/1 to pull off a shock victory. The tie on the night is available at 25/1.

Fiji vs Georgia Prediction

  • Georgia +18.5 handicap @ 10/11
  • Fiji win by 11-15 points inclusive @ 6/1

Team news

Fiji have made just one change from the starting XV that bested Australia, as Selesitino Ravutaumada replaces Jiuta Wainiqolo on the wing for Simon Raiwalui’s side.

Eroni Mawi, Samuel Matavesi and Luke Tagi start again in the front-row, while Levani Boti has kept his place in the back-row after a fine performance against the Wallabies.

As for Georgia, head coach Levan Maisashvili has rung the changes, with Luka Matkava and Vaso Lobzhanidze returning to the half-backs.

Davit Niniashvili has swapped left wing for full-back, while in the forwards, Tornike Jalaghonia has switched to number eight with Mikheil Gachechiladze replacing him in the number six jersey.

Georgia +18.5 handicap @ 10/11

The Fijians have the quality and the game plan to come out on top in this game to take a step closer to the quarter-final spot.

However, Georgia have the ability to score points and Fiji’s kicking at goal cannot always be relied upon.

That means the +18.5 handicap for Georgia looks very generous at 10/11 and they should make this a slightly tighter contest than some might expect.

Fiji win by 11-15 points inclusive @ 6/1

A backline with Ravutaumada, Waisea Nayacalevu, Josua Tuisova and Semi Radrada in it would keep any defensive coach up at night.

Fiji have the players to break the Georgian lines and the offload game to secure the victory in Bordeaux.

While possibly not falling on the right side of the -18.5 handicap here, Fiji should still win while depriving Georgia of a losing bonus point.

With that in mind, a Fiji win by 11-15 at 6/1 is worth considering.
