Argentina will be eyeing a convincing win over Chile on Saturday to keep their hopes of reaching the 2023 World Cup knockout stages alive.

Los Pumas have underwhelmed at the tournament on French soil so far, but should secure a confidence-boosting victory over a Chilean side who have predictably struggled at this World Cup.

Argentina are distant favourites at 1/500 for the win, while Chile are 33/1 to cause one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. A tie on the night at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes is available at 100/1.

Argentina vs Chile Tips

  • Handicap – Chile +50.5 @ 5/6
  • Argentina to win by 31-35 points inclusive @ 10/1

Team news

Argentina head coach Michael Cheika has made 11 changes from the side that battled their way to a 19-10 win over Samoa last time out.

Marcos Kremer, Guido Petti, Eduardo Bello, and Juan Martin Gonzalez are the four players to keep the starting spots from that victory over the Pacific Islanders.

Rodrigo Isgro and Martin Bogado have both been named in the starting line-up and are set to make their World Cup debuts this weekend.

As for Chile, head coach Pablo Lemoine has made eight changes to his matchday squad, with Martin Sigren returning to the back-row, with Clemente Saavedra and Raimundo Martinez alongside him.

Javier Carrasco returns at loosehead prop to replace Salvador Lues, while Augusto Bohme and Matias Dittus have kept their starting roles at hooker and tighthead respectively.

Handicap – Chile +50.5 @ 5/6

Argentina don’t have a great record of covering the handicap when it comes to World Cup pool games, having done so once in their last six matches.

The fact they have made so many changes for this game means they might take some time to settle and gel, especially in the backline.

That might well make it harder for Los Pumas to put up the same numbers as England managed against Chile, with Steve Borthwick’s side running out 71-0 winners.

Considering Argentina’s previous record in the handicap market at World Cups, Chile with +50.5 looks to be the way to go here.

Argentina to win by 31-35 points inclusive @ 10/1

While likely to fall short in the handicap market, Argentina should still win convincingly and are 10/1 to win by 31-35 points inclusive.

Ignoring the thrashing at the hands of England last time out, Chile lost by 30 and 33 points in their opening two games against Japan and Samoa respectively.

Looking at that sort of ballpark figure here, 31-35 points inclusive as a winning margin for Los Pumas looks achievable.
