After impressing on their return to the big time, Wakefield Trinity open their 2026 campaign at the DIY Kitchens Stadium with a fascinating match-up on Saturday against newly-promoted Betfred Championship Grand Final winners Toulouse Olympique (20:00 GMT, Sky Sports+)

It underlines Wakefield's own progress that this is actually a repeat of the 2024 Grand Final, and most would expect a Trinity win again in this one. Below are my Wakefield Trinity vs Toulouse predictions, the latest team news and full match odds from Betfred.

Team News

Wakefield could hand a debut to new boy Jazz Tevaga despite him missing out in both pre-season and Challenge Cup wins so far.

Boss Daryl Powell will be without England winger Tom Johnstone, however, with fellow outside backs Oliver Pratt and Jayden Myers also out. Prop Ky Rodwell is again missing but there is bags of experience in this Trinity side. England forward Mike McMeeken is likely to be a key figure, with Mason Lino and Jake Trueman the expected halves, although their new signing from Leeds Rhinos, Jack Sinfield, is included in the squad.

Toulouse opted not to compete in the Betfred Challenge Cup so Sylvain Houles' side will either be very fresh or coming into the season pretty cold.

The French side could hand debuts to the likes of prop forward Tyler Dupree from Wigan Warriors, along with Luke Polselli, Cesar Rouge and Henry O'Kane.

Some key men are missing though, including Jake Shorrocks, France international winger Paul Marcon and Maxime Stefani.

Wakefield Trinity vs Toulouse Odds

Wakey are huge favourites, with title sponsors Betfred offering 1/14 about them picking up the home win. That implies a 93.3% probability of a Trinity victory.

Toulouse are 8/1, with the draw available at 22/1.

At 7/1, Lachlan Walmsley is the favourite to score the opening try of the game, while Toulouse are handed a 19.5-point start in the two-way handicap market. They're 10/11 to make the most of it, with Wakey 5/6 to overcome the disadvantage.

Handicap 3-way: Toulouse +20 @ 1/1

I think this could prove a tough start for an already stretched-looking Toulouse squad, but as with several other fixtures this weekend, it is tough to take on the big handicaps when the weather is so rubbish and both sets of players are effectively still in pre-season.

Wakefield are good at home. Very good in fact, winning eight of their last 10 Super League games at Belle Vue.

So while I feel Wakefield should have more than enough to see this one through, I just can't feel at all confident in backing big wins this early in the season. Maybe that is my risk-adverse nature, the dreadful current weather, or the relative unknown quantities coming up into Super League in Toulouse, Bradford and York - who stunned champions Hull KR on Thursday night.

So at the risk of being way off, I'm tempted to take Toulouse with a 20-point start in the hope that it's a bit of a muddy, ugly one in West Yorkshire.

I really liked the look of Wakefield last season and expect them to have some decent moments again in 2026. Toulouse, I feel, will struggle, even with the signings they have made.

Lachlan Walmsley Anytime Tryscorer @ 4/6

Given Trinity's injuries in the outside backs, Lachlan Walmsley earns a recall to the squad and I would expect him to take his chance.

A natural finisher with pace to burn, if the home side dominate possession then there will be chances. And the flame-haired flyer is the man to finish them off.

For Toulouse I would be looking at full-back Olly Ashall-Bott, who really impressed me in the Betfred Championship last season. If you fancy the French side to pose Trinity some problems then he is available at 11/4.
