Castleford Tigers vs Huddersfield Giants Prediction: Wing wizard to find the line in derby win

It hasn't been an easy start to the season for either Castleford Tigers or Huddersfield Giants, with the West Yorkshire rivals meeting in Round 3 as the bottom two sides in the Betfred Super League (20:00 GMT, Sky Sports+)
The Tigers have been beaten by both Wigan and Toulouse so far, while the Giants have suffered early injury problems as well as defeats to Catalans and Wakefield. All of which means I'll be tipping a close-run thing in my Castleford Tigers vs Huddersfield Giants prediction, which follow below with match odds from Betfred and the latest team news.

Team News
The big news from Castleford this season has been the loss of star signing Blake Taaffe, who was injured in the opener against Wigan. That has proved to be a season-ender already. An ACL injury means Taaffe won't play again in 2026 - a hammer blow for new boss Ryan Carr.
His place in the defeat at Toulouse last week was taken by Fletcher Rooney, while the Tigers dipped into the transfer market last week to bring in veteran utility Ashton Golding and Wigan rising star George Hirst, though neither played in France. Both are named in this week's 21-man squad
Also out is Brock Greacen, who is yet to feature for the club, but Jack Ashworth is ready to return from a mammoth seven-match ban and Zac Cini is included for the first time this season after injury.
Alex Mellor drops out this week, while a lengthy Cas injury list also includes Louis Senior and Semi Valemei.
Huddersfield's squad is just as decimated already. Out are key men Niall Evalds, Adam Swift and Adam Clune, and Liam Sutcliffe is now sidelined for three months. Harry Rushton and Joe Greenwood are also out for at least two months and back row forward Sam Hewitt will serve a one-match ban. Added to the squad this week are Zach Brown and Jacob Algar.
The Giants this week swooped to sign Frenchman Tanguy Zenon from crisis-hit Halifax Panthers, and Zenon is added to an initial 20-man squad named by head coach Luke Robinson.
Castleford Tigers vs Huddersfield Giants Odds
The Tigers are marginal favourites to win this battle of West Yorkshire, with Betfred pricing them up at 8/15. That implies a 65.2% probability.
Huddersfield can be backed at 17/10, while the draw is a 14/1 chance.
The two-way handicap market sees the line drawn at 6.5 points, with Cas 20/21 to overcome the one-score difference. The Giants are 5/6 with the extra points in their favour.
Handicap 3-way: Castleford -6 @ 20/21
Now here's a stat for you. Five out of the last six meetings between these two sides has been won by the away side. So Huddersfield fans should travel in hope.
There hasn't been much to cheer for either side in the early stages of the 2026 campaign but I thought Cas showed spirit in their first home game before going down to defeat by Wigan.
Huddersfield haven't been a million miles off, only losing to Wakefield last weekend by two points. So you would expect this to be pretty tight, even if the two meetings last season ended in 30-12 scorelines (one win apiece).
Based mainly on what I saw from Castleford at home to Wigan, and the respective injury lists, I am going to ignore the recent trend of away wins and am sticking with the home side to get off the mark here.
The handicap has Cas to win by a converted score which I feel is reasonable, and in the absence of any encouraging form to analyse from either side then I am backing whom I believe to be the stronger team. I really like Ryan Carr as a coach and his arrival in Super League has been a long time coming.
This is a game neither side will want to lose and the prospect of going no wins from three is pretty grim, so there could already be a bit of fear in what we see from both sides. I feel that if the home team get off on the right foot then they will win this game.

Mikaele Ravalawa Anytime Tryscorer @ 4/5
If Cas are to come away with the win, then expect points from their star man out wide, Mikaele Ravalawa. The giant Fijian wing is going to be a crowd favourite this year. Some of his defence can be questionable but he is almost impossible to stop at the other end, and I would be pretty confident in a Ravalawa try at 4/5.
The other Tigers star of interest is Rooney. Boss Carr has told the 20-year-old that this is his time to shine in the absence of the unfortunate Taaffe - the Tigers' new signing who has already been ruled out for the season - and a Rooney try is a 5/4 chance with Betfred.
If you fancy success for the away side, then my gaze is always taken by rising star George Flanagan, who can conjure a try out of nothing. He is also decent value at 5/4.
If you are feeling bold then why not combine a punt? Ravalawa and Flanagan to both score a try in the game is an enticing 3/1 shot.
