Storm warriors

Melbourne Storm’s worst run of form since 2022 has seen them slip to 12th spot in the early NRL Premiership table, and on Saturday they face a New Zealand Warriors side who also need to get their feet back under them after back-to-back losses (19:35 local, 10:35 BST, Sky Sports Action).

The AAMI Park showdown will come as a welcome fillip to one of these struggling sides, but which one? Here are my Storm vs Warriors predictions are below, with full team news and Betfred’s match odds.

Storm vs Warriors Odds

Despite three straight defeats, the Storm are heavy favourites to win on Saturday. They’re 1/3 with Betfred for the win in 80 minutes, while the Warriors’ 5/2 odds imply a 28.6% chance of an away victory.

The draw in normal time is 18/1, with Andrew Webster’s visitors given a 9.5-point start in the two-way handicap market. Against that setting, the Warriors are 10/11 and the Storm 5/6.

Team News

Craig Bellamy makes a number of changes after watching his side 50 points last week for the first time since his rookie year with the club in 2003.

Siulagi Tuimalatu-Brown is dropped and Manaia Waitere is demoted to the bench as Jack Howarth comes back from a hip problem and Moses Leo return after observing concussion protocols.

Preston Conn is out of the 19 having been one of the unused substitutes in the hammering against the Panthers. Lazarus Vaalepu is added to the squad in his place.

Rugby League Odds

The Warriors are without hamstring injury victim Luke Metcalf, so Chanel Harris-Tavita will start as the stand-off.

There will need to be a rethink in the centres, where Webster initially named Adam Pompey. The Maori All-Star has since had his appeal against a two-match ban rejected, so late changes will be made to the 22 submitted by the Wahs earlier in the week.

Storm by 1-12 @ 2/1

Bellamy’s Storm are surely too good for their recent run of defeats to continue. Granted, we probably all thought along similar lines a week ago before they shipped 50 to Penrith, but up against the Warriors the impetus will be on Melbourne.

While few would have envisaged them been torn apart in quite that manner by the Panthers, it’s no shame to have lost to them. Add in the narrow defeat to the Broncos, and their 28-24 reverse to the Cowboys is the only true shock.

But the Storm head coach has been with the club through many a peak and trough, and 99.9% of the time he has got them back on the horse sooner rather than later.

And with the likes of Harry Grant, Cameron Munster and Jahrome Hughes on hand, they should have more than enough quality and character to right the ship.

I have them down to get a narrow lead early on and just about hold off the Wahs, who are rarely the best travellers in the comp.

Storm to Win Both Halves @ 7/5

It’s all about the start at AAMI Park for me.

If the Storm get off to a positive start, I can well see them building on it just enough to keep the Warriors from the door.

Against both the Broncos and the Cowboys they failed to get any real breathing room, and then they were beaten long before half-time by the Panthers.

But if they can gain a foothold against the Wahs, I think they’ll do enough. And a narrow half-time advantage being widened slightly after the break sounds about right to me, with the Storm to win both halves slated at a healthy 7/5 by Betfred’s traders.
