Saints legend Paul Sculthorpe previews the Betfred Super League clash between the champions and Betfred Challenge Cup heroes Leigh Leopards on Friday night (20:00).

Sculthorpe’s St Helens vs Leigh Prediction

  • Saints to win by 13+ points @ 10/11

Strap in, as we’re set for a thrilling ride into the last three regular rounds of the Betfred Super League.

Wigan, Catalans and of course Saints make up the top three in the table, all on equal points and separated only by for and against scores.

The Dragons have suffered a dramatic dip in form as we approach the business end of the campaign, losing two on the bounce – one being that humiliating 34-defeat at the hands of the Warriors.

However, they just about hold onto that all-important second place, just 15 points better than Saints, which would grant them a home semi-final and therefore a better opportunity to make the Grand Final at Old Trafford on October 14.

Saints are well and truly playing their part in the race for the League Leaders’ Shield, having put bottom club Wakefield to the sword in a 32-16 win at the Be Well Support Stadium last weekend.

As a result, the four-time champs are now 15/8 favourites with Betfred to win the title, ahead of Wigan and Catalans who are both 9/1 shots.

In the words of head coach Paul Wellens, there were “mixed emotions” about the latest performance. It was a convincing win, but there’s still a lot to work on as the intensity and enormity of games ramps up.

The one thing Wello was delighted with is the way the players stick together and work hard for each other. This is one of the traits that has won them the last four consecutive championships, and something that they’ll need again.

Next up for Saints, on Friday night, is a home tie against the Leigh Leopards.

A huge game nonetheless, but especially given Catalans face basement boys Wakefield Trinity and Wigan take on a Leeds side who have endured another poor season.

I predict all three to claim two points, with Saints tipped to win by 13 or more.
