A mouth-watering Betfred Super League clash awaits on Friday night (20:00) as league leaders St Helens host Catalans Dragons at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

As ever, Saints legend Paul Sculthorpe is at the ready with his St Helens vs Catalans Dragons predictions ahead of the game which will be live on Sky Sports Main Event.

St Helens vs Catalans Dragons Tips

  • St Helens -15.5 @ 8/5

Saints put in a dominant performance on Friday, thumping one of our great rivals of yesteryear - Leeds Rhinos.

They are frankly a shell of the club they used to be, regularly finding themselves out of the play-off positions despite new signings season after season.

They were demolished 40-10, a week after a 26-0 thumping courtesy of our upcoming rivals Catalans Dragons.

Despite the eventual scoreline, it was the Rhinos who got on the scoreboard first against us through Ash Handley, before the home side put things right to go into the break 12-6 up.

The second-half saw Saints blow the opposition away with five more tries, showing far more attacking quality than in previous weeks.

The gaffer Paul Wellens was full of praise for his players, but insisted there is a lot more improvement to come. He spoke about how defence is always a priority in games, and this is something the club pride themselves on.

I caught up with my old mate Wello after the game and he certainly looks like he’s thriving in the job. He did speak in the press conference of his pride in the way his players come together when needed. That was needed again on Friday after losing two more key players to injury - namely Joe Batchelor after only five minutes with an ankle injury and skipper Jonny Lomax with what looks like a fractured hand.

There's been a lot of talk about the Saints attack recently, but I thought Friday provided a glimpse of what we do best when on their game.

Tough going forward, quick play with bodies in motion - and play what’s in front of you. When defences are on the back foot you don’t want the likes of Daryl Clark and Jack Welsby running at you!

I thought the three of Mata'utia, Sironen and Bell were outstanding. Always a run threat, but all had the ability to make a try-scoring pass or offload.

Hopefully this is a performance to build on as we entertain the Dragons on Friday.

All eyes will no doubt be on star winger Tommy Makinson, who is yet to be officially confirmed as a Dragon for 2025... but everyone knows!

Tommy crossed for his 200th try in the Red V against the Rhinos on Friday and will certainly be a loss to the club when he departs at the end of the season.

However, I know he will be doing everything he can to bow out as a champion.

Finally, my prediction for Friday's game - I'm going for a home win by 16 points or more.

St Helens -15.5 handicap vs Catalans Dragons at 8-5
