Sharks warriors

After a surprise first defeat of the NRL Premiership season, the New Zealand Warriors take on the Cronulla Sharks on Sunday at Shark Park looking to get back on the horse (14:00 local, 05:00 BST, Watch NRL).

The Sharks beat the stumbling Raiders last week but could go level with the visitors on the ladder with a Round 5 win. Here are my Sharks vs Warriors predictions, complete with the latest team news and match odds from Betfred.

Sharks vs Warriors Odds

As a side who historically have made a bit of a fortress for themselves by Woolooware Bay, the Sharks are naturally favoured for the win on Sunday.

Betfred have them as a 4/7 chance to overcome the Warriors, implying a 63.6% probability.

The visitors are 6/4 to record a ninth win in 23 visits to Shark Park, with the draw at 16/1.

The Sharks give up 4.5 on the handicap market, with their price adjusted to 10/11. The Warriors are 5/6 to win with the extra leg-up.

Team News

Craig Fitzgibbon sticks to his guns after their victory over the reigning Minor Premiers, but there are a couple of additions beyond the first XIII.

Mawene Hiroti is among the interchanges after overcoming a knee injury, while Briton Nikora gets the number 22 spot as a reserve now that’s he back from a broken nose.

Rugby League Odds

For Andrew Webster, there is also a familiar look to the starting line-up. But the Warriors coach has to do without Mitch Barnett due to a hand injury, so Demitric Vaimauga is named on the bench.

Former Leeds Rhinos back-rower Morgan Gannon is back after observing concussion protocols, but he’s only picked among the reserves in this one.

Sharks by 1-12 @ 21/10

Just as I’d always side towards the Warriors on home territory, I rarely back against the Sharks on their own turf.

It’s not a fine art, of course. The Warriors are 1-0 in Australia so far thanks to a win over the Knights, while Cronulla were thumped by the Dolphins last time out at Shark Park.

But Fitzgibbon has so much firepower available to him, with Braydon Trindall and Nicho Hynes doing plenty of damage off the back of a willing pack. Then there’s the strike of Will Kennedy, Sione Katoa and Sam Stonestreet.

While the Warriors can rack up points themselves, they are prone to going missing if their forwards can’t get a roll on. And that’s why I fancy the Sharks by a score or two at the very welcoming price of 21/10.

Over 46.5 Total Points @ 10/11

The 46.5 marker appears on the low side for a meeting of two sides who know how to less loose on their day.

Perhaps the thinking is that they could end up cancelling themselves out, but I believe there’s enough in this one to suggest anything less than 24 points might not be sufficient to win the game.

So to that end, I like the look of the Over at 10/11. With two devastating outside-back divisions, anything approach decent progress through the middle of the park ought to result in plenty of points.
