Roosters vs Cowboys Prediction: Seven straight for Sydney but Cowboys can keep it close

The middle game of the middle day at the NRL’s Magic Weekend sees the red-hot Sydney Roosters take on surprise challengers in the North Queensland Cowboys on Saturday (17:30 local, 08:30 BST, Sky Sports Action).
Easts have won six in six, while North Queensland have shocked many in rising to seventh with a half-dozen success in the last eight attempts. My Roosters vs Cowboys predictions are below, complete with full team news and Betfred’s match odds.
Roosters vs Cowboys Betting Tips
*odds correct at time of publishing
There’s a big favourite on the Outright market, with the Roosters a 2/9 bet. That implies an 81.8% probability.
You can back the Cowboys at 7/2, while the draw is out at 20/1.
Sydney winger Daniel Tupou is fancied for the opening try of the game at 6/1, with skipper James Tedesco at 7/1.
Team News
Trent Robinson makes a couple of changes to his starting XIII, with England international Victor Radley missing through suspension and Lindsay Collins back in the line-up following concussion.
Spencer Leniu drops out to make way for Collins, while Connor Watson steps up to replace Radley.
For Todd Payten there are a couple of notable absentees. Captain Tom Dearden is missing with an ankle injury, while veteran Jason Taumalolo is left out of the squad.
Liam Sutton is in line for his NRL debut in the halves to replace Dearden, while Matt Lodge comes into the front row for Taumalolo. Jake Clifford shifts from stand-off to scrum-half to allow Sutton to wear the No.6 jersey.
Handicap 3-way Alt 1: Cowboys +10 @ 7/5
The bookies are very much counting on a big Roosters win, with the absences of Dearden and Taumalolo from the Cowboys side perhaps weighing into their thinking.
But Robinson is missing Radley and Mark Nawaqanitawase, so the Roosters are not at full strength either.
North Queensland are returning to the scene of their stunning 35-31 upset win against the Broncos in Round 6, and while I don’t think they’ll collect the two points the handicap markets look a bit off to me.
I fancy the Cowboys to keep this one relatively close, so the 7/5 about them being within 10 points at full-time really appeals. To back the Roosters by a bigger score is to underestimate the leaps made by Payten’s side this term.

Scott Drinkwater Anytime Tryscorer @ 6/4
With the Roosters well backed, it is in the Cowboys line-up that we can see some real value. And full-back Scott Drinkwater is one of the best players in the league right now.
He has six tries to his name in 2026, and exhibited his firepower with a brace in the 28-12 win against the Bulldogs a fortnight ago.
I’m backing him to notch again at Magic Weekend at a generous 6/4.
