London Broncos host their first home game back in the Betfred Super League, licking their wounds from a 36-point loss at St Helens in round one, with the Catalans Dragons the first visitors of the season to the Cherry Red Records Stadium on Friday night (kick-off 20:00 GMT).

While London went down to a thumping 40-4 defeat at the former champions, Catalans edged a bruising home contest with the Warrington Wolves 16-10 and are heavy favourites to make it two wins out of two to kick off the campaign

Followers of this column may have taken our tip for the Dragons to win narrowly by 1-12 for a 9/5 return and a tidy start to the new season as part of three correct calls on the opening weekend.

Team news

London had six Betfred Super League debutants in last week’s defeat at St Helens, and coach Mike Eccles will know his inexperienced side will be massively up against it for the visit of last year’s runners-up.

Jacob Jones has rejoined the club on a one-month loan from Leigh Leopards with immediate effect and joins a team taking the positives from that Saints loss, which coach Eccles believes “should have been more like 26-10”.

Catalans are boosted by a two-year contract extension for head coach Steve McNamara but will have to shuffle their formidable pack straight away with two of their key men suspended.

Hooker Michael McIlorum was one of four players to be sent off in the opening round of games and has been hit with a four-match ban. Paul Seguier was initially banned for two games but that was reduced to one on appeal.

There are two very good replacements to come back in however, as captain Ben Garcia returns following a hamstring injury along with Cesar Rouge.

It is difficult to see anything other than defeat again for London despite the positives their head coach saw in an eight-tries-to-one loss at Saints. Catalans don’t lose many games and they will emerge stronger from that tight tussle against Sam Burgess and his new-look Wolves.

The French side have won their last five away games against London, whose last victory over the Dragons at home came 14 years ago when they played as Harlequins at the Twickenham Stoop.

There haven’t actually been many blowout scores between the two sides, with London even winning twice in Perpignan in 2019. But since then Catalans have strengthened each year, and this London side just does not look equipped to compete at Super League level this year.

I feel the Dragons' extra class will be enough for a decent enough victory margin, with the 22-point handicap looking the most tempting.

Arthur Mourgue anytime tryscorer @ 6/4

When this young Frenchman was coming through the ranks at Catalans, Sam Tomkins was raving about him at every opportunity. Mourgue has had to be patient, and finally gets his chances as a Dragons mainstay following Tomkins’ retirement.

As dangerous in the halves as he is at full-back, Mourgue is lightning quick with a great step and an eye for a try, crossing the whitewash already in that round-one win over Warrington.

He looks a great bet to exploit the London defence for more points here.
