George riley super league ball

Another week, another attempt at a Salford victory in the Betfred Super League. It is a horrible time to be a Red Devils fan, or indeed player, and unfortunately for Paul Rowley's side this weekend at Magic, they are up against the league leaders on Saturday (17:15, Sky Sports Action).

Hull KR can reassert a four-point lead over champions Wigan at the top with a win in this one, and very few people would give Salford any hope of avoiding a hiding. Below are my Hull KR vs Salford Red Devils predictions, accompanied by team news and match odds.

Team News

Both head coaches make three changes to their squads for the trip to Newcastle as Hull KR look to grab a big win.

Rovers are still without their two first-choice wingers in Tom Davies and Joe Burgess through injury. Kelepi Tanginoa is ruled out through concussion protocols after picking up a head injury in last weekend's win over Leeds.

Sauaso Sue is named in the squad after he was not charged following his red card in the Leeds game. Eribe Doro, Noah Booth and AJ Wallace are back in the squad after loan spells at Bradford, Featherstone and Sheffield, so dropping out are Leon Ruan and Zach Fishwick.

Salford finally have some good news with the return to the squad of winger Ethan Ryan and also the experienced Chris Hankinson, who has been missing since suffering a shoulder injury at Catalans. Matty Foster has also been given the green light to play.

Two key men drop out, though, with Joe Mellor picking up an ankle injury against Leigh last Saturday and youngster Jake Thewlis recalled to Warrington. Once again, Rowley is only able to name 19 players in his 21-man squad.

Hull KR vs Salford Red Devils Odds

Hull KR are huge favourites (1/500) to win on Saturday, with Salford Red Devils 25/1, or a 3.8% chance, and the draw 66/1.

Handicap 3-way Hull KR -42 @ 21/20

You don't often see a handicap this big in a Super League fixture, and normally, with a hefty handicap, I would back the weaker side to justify it. But this week I think it is probably about right.

Turning up for Salford games at the moment is just a very odd experience. With depleted squads every week due to salary cap restrictions implemented following a takeover that has never fully happened, Salford right now just have no chance of winning a game. It is a bizarre and very depressing state of affairs, and this week there will be no magic for the Red Devils at Magic Weekend.

The return of Chris Hankinson will help, but even that is somewhat offset by the loss of Joe Mellor. With further senior players now departed in Chris Atkin and Deon Cross, it increasingly feels like a case of last man out, please turn off the lights.

There is no chance Salford can win this game or keep it close.

Can they cover a 42-point handicap? If they play with some of the spirit shown in the second half against Leigh last week, when they have half a chance, but I would not back that with any confidence. This will be a very hefty Hull KR win.

Jack Broadbent anytime tryscorer @ 3/10

We made a great punt last week on Jack Broadbent to score a try in 80 minutes against his former side Leeds Rhinos at Headingley. In fact, both of our tips came in with Hull KR winning the game at 1/1 and Broadbent not only scoring at 5/4 but helping himself to two tries on the night.

He is a player I have always liked, and the absence of starting wingers Burgess and Davies made me back Broadbent as a guaranteed starter out wide - he has been used off the bench, at full-back and in the centres too.

I have no intention of changing a winning formula, so I am once again backing Broadbent to enjoy a Magic Weekend.
