Dragons vs knights

St George-Illawarra Dragons’ desperate search for a first win of the NRL Premiership season continues into a ninth game on Saturday when they host the Newcastle Knights at WIN Stadium (15:00 local, 06:00 BST, Watch NRL).

Dean Young will be looking for a far better performance than the Dragons served up in his first game in interim charge, when they went down 62-16 to the Roosters. My Dragons vs Knights predictions are below with full team news and the latest match odds.

Dragons vs Knights Odds

Given the strife at the Dragons right now, you won’t need to guess who are favourites here. The Knights are a 2/5 shot, implying a 71.4% probability.

St George are 11/5 for the win in 80 minutes, with 16/1 about the draw in regulation time.

Newcastle give up a 9.5-point lead in the two-way handicap, with the Knights 5/6 and Dragons 10/11 within those redrawn boundaries.

Team News

Young was handed the best news he could be in terms of playing resources this week when given the all-clear to call upon skipper Clint Gutherson.

The full-back returns from a hamstring injury after missing the last three, so Tyrell Sloan drops to the bench to make way.

Hamish Stewart comes in for Josh Kerr at 13, with Luciano Leilua missing out through suspension. The back-rower is replaced by Dylan Egan.

Rugby League Odds

After returning to winning ways in their high-scoring clash with the Rabbitohs in Round 9, the Knights have the same starting XIII ready to go again in Wollongong.

Head coach Justin Holbrook drops Cody Hopwood out of the matchday 19, with Harrison Graham stepping in to fill up the interchange panel.

Knights by 13+ @ 11/10

Not since their golden-point extra-time loss to the Bulldogs in Las Vegas in February have the Dragons come particularly close to getting something out of a game.

They come into this one with the benefit of some fresh lungs after their bye-week in Round 9, but there needs to be a renewed attitude and focus about them too following that stuffing by the Roosters when they last took to the field.

The Knights, meanwhile, got back on the horse last week in beating the Bunnies 42-38. And that result will surely come as a bigger confidence boost to them than the week off will have done for St George.

Beyond that, I have just seen far more quality in this Knights side than anybody has witnessed from the Dragons to this point, so I don’t see them keeping it within two scores in this one.

Knights Over 30.5 Points @ 10/11

Newcastle are averaging 26.5 points per away game this season, and coming off the back of that seven-try performance in the Hunter Valley last week they will be raring to go again as an attacking force on Saturday.

The Dragons have shipped 33.13 per game so far, and they’ve conceded 30 or more five times already.

That all makes the 10/11 about the Knights scoring at least 31 look tasty to me. Until I see otherwise, I won’t be expecting anything close to resilience out of St George.
