Betfred Super League: Wigan fired up for Paris trip after thumping Challenge Cup triumph

Just days on from clinching a 22nd Betfred Challenge Cup success at Wembley against previous holders Hull KR, Wigan Warriors embark on some Betfred Super League history on Saturday when they face Catalans Dragons in Paris.
Thirty years on from the summer era’s opening fixture in the French capital, the sport returns to the iconic city for a special clash between two sides who have taken their fixture on the road to the likes of Montpellier, London and Barcelona before now.

Wigan arrive on the continent on the back of a monumental 40-10 win over the Robins at the national stadium in a measure of revenge for last October’s Grand Final defeat. And Warriors forward Ollie Partington has told The Sportsman Rugby League’s The Last Tackle show that the size of the scoreline last weekend blew even him away.
“We were still stinging a bit as a club from the Grand Final loss in 2025 so it was really important for us to start well and get the win,” says the former Salford and Catalans pack star.
“We expected it to go down to the wire, as it normally does between the two teams, but we handled the heat and were on the right side of the errors and penalties. That allowed us to score that many points at the back end of the game.”
Now Partington is gearing up for the trip to the Stade Jean-Bouin this weekend in the latest big occasion on the Warriors’ fixture list.
“It’s going to be a great atmosphere down there. Plenty of French fans are coming, and hopefully a few neutrals as well. I know Wigan are taking some fans down there, so it’s exciting times going and playing in the capital of France.
“We’ve got Wembley, Paris and then Wakefield away as another exciting one! It’s groundbreaking stuff, and we’re looking forward to growing the game in France.”
The Round 13 fixture kicks off at 7:30pm local time on Sunday at the Jean-Bouin, which lies adjacent to Paris Saint-Germain’s Parc des Princes stadium.
Matt Peet’s side will hope to return with a far better result than their previous relocated away game against the Dragons, when they were beaten 33-16 at Barcelona’s Camp Nou in 2019 in front a then-record Betfred Super League crowd of over 31,000 supporters.
