The race for the NRL play-off places is typically tight and Canberra Raiders and Newcastle Knights are just two of a number of clubs on the outside looking in at present.

It's been a tough month for Canberra, who have lost their last three outings, conceding almost a century of points in the process. The Raiders have won just one of their last five games and are level on the ladder with Newcastle, who also have 18 points after 15 games.

Canberra Raiders vs Newcastle Knights Betting Tips

  • Newcastle Knights -2.5 @ 10/11
  • Under 49.5 total points @ 5/6

Team news

New South Wales forward Hudson Young has withdrawn from the Raiders' matchday squad, so Ata Mariota will start in the second row.

Newcastle have been handed a huge boost with the return of superstar skipper Kalyn Ponga at full-back. Prop Leo Thompson and second-rower Dylan Lucas are also named in the Knights 17-man squad, but hooker Phoenix Crossland misses out due to concussion protocols.

Newcastle Knights -2.5 @ 10/11

Canberra and Newcastle are already approaching must-win territory as the NRL play-offs approach ever nearer into view.

Neither have been in great form over the past month, with the Raiders on a three-game losing streak and the Knights snapping their own trio of fruitless outings last weekend with a nervy win over ailing Parramatta.

The Knights had won four on the spin prior to losing to Canterbury and the top two of Melbourne and Penrith however, so there is slightly more substance to their form, and of the two they look the likelier to forge a play-off push over the final weeks of the season.

The return of captain Kalyn Ponga will undoubtedly be a positive in that endeavour and the X-factor he provides could swing Sunday's contest in Newcastle's favour.

Under 49.5 total points @ 5/6

While Newcastle are expected to claim victory, the chances of a points-fest in the Australia capital may be less than the total points line suggests.

No side has scored fewer points in the NRL this season than the Knights (282) while Canberra aren't that prolific either with 302 points posted in 15 outings.

For all Newcastle's struggles to put points on the board they do boast the sixth-best defence in the competition and such relative defensive resilience could contribute to a low-scoring encounter.

Match Odds

Canberra Raiders are 11/10 to snap a three-game losing streak against the Newcastle Knights on Sunday. The Knights are 8/11 to win in the Australia capital with the 80-minute draw available at 22/1.

Total points are pitched at 49.5 and it is 10/11 that there are 50 or more points and 5/6 that there are fewer than a half-century scored at Canberra Stadium.
