Broncos vs bulldogs

The NRL champion Brisbane Broncos could return to the top eight of the early standings on Friday when they host the Canterbury Bulldogs at Suncorp Stadium (20:00 local, 11:00 BST, Sky Sports Action).

Michael Maguire’s side have regained ground after their initial struggles, but now have to deal with a string of injuries to key players. Here are my Broncos vs Bulldogs predictions, along with full team news and Betfred’s match odds.

Broncos vs Bulldogs Betting Tips

  • Broncos by 1-12 @ 11/4

Broncos vs Bulldogs Odds

The Broncos are 7/5 for the win, with their growing casualty list helping to turn Betfred’s traders against them.

Despite falling to three defeats in four, the Bulldogs are an 8/13 bet to triumph inside 80 minutes. It’s 18/1 for the draw in normal time.

Marcelo Montoya is the 7/1 favourite to score the first try, with Josiah Karapani the most-heavily backed Bronco at 8/1.

Team News

Where do we start with the Broncos?

Payne Haas doesn’t make this one after leaving the field early in last week’s 21-20 win over the Tigers due to a knee injury. Jesse Arhars, though, is fit to play having also not made it to full-time in Campbelltown.

Cory Paix is back, though, so he will start between Ben Talty and Jack Gosiewski in the front row.

Va’a Semu will make his NRL debut if he makes it off the bench.

Rugby League Odds

The Bulldogs are boosted by the return of Stephen Crichton after a shoulder injury. Jacob Kiraz is out with a knee problem, so Jonathan Sua makes his second ever start at this level.

Josh Curran drops to the bench, where Jake Turpin is also included.

Broncos by 1-12 @ 11/4

The Bulldogs are getting much of the backing in the betting. But if you look less at the Broncos’ injury list and instead at what these two have served up on the actual field then there is far more at play.

Ok, so it’s only a fortnight since the Dogs beat the previously perfect Panthers and Brisbane lost to the Cowboys. But on both counts that was the exception that proved the rule.

The Broncos have otherwise been on an upward curve, while Cameron Ciraldo’s side have lost three in four and were very much second best to the Eels last Sunday.

And because of that, I just don’t feel able to back the Bulldogs for the win. They have been way off it for too much of this season so far.

They’ve got the second-worst attack in the comp, have shipped 70 points in their last two defeats, and simply don’t have that resoluteness right now which had become their calling card for most of 2025.

I’ve seen enough in the battling Broncos to think they can pull off another close victory on Friday to follow that excellent win over the in-form Tigers.

Gehamat Shibasaki Anytime Tryscorer @ 6/4

Shibasaki hasn’t had the most straightforward of starts to the season. After two tries in the World Club Challenge defeat to Hull KR, he was dropped by Round 3 and has had to work his way back into favour.

But he has undoubtedly quality, and the 6/4 price against him crossing looks hefty given the Bulldogs’ struggles defensively of late.

The odds imply a 40% probability, which is on the skinny side.
