Bing Crosby sees off Frank Sinatra in the battle of the crooners as the festive season clicks into gear

Bing Crosby’s White Christmas has been voted Britain’s favourite ever snow-themed song in a nationwide poll.

The 1942 classic written by Irving Berlin fought off strong competition from another legendary crooner - Frank Sinatra - to scoop almost a third of the votes in the Censuswide survey.

The UK-wide vote found 32.9% had White Christmas down as their favourite track, beating Let It Snow by Sinatra down into second place.

The 1950 version by Old Blue Eyes still performed well, securing 25.5% of the vote carried out by Betfred to mark their £5million Christmas Draw.

But it was Crosby who came out dominant - and in Northern Ireland his dulcet tones were even more popular, where one in two said his was the best snow song around, twice as many as plumped for Sinatra's effort.

In a surprising turn-up, the much-played Johnny Mathis song Winter Wonderland polled relatively low - securing just 16% support to come home third.

That made it only fractionally more popular than the Jimmy Durante release of Frosty The Snowman, which came out in 1950.

And despite its more poignant meaning about friendship, the Sara Bareilla tune Winter Song also proved a hit, taking 8.7% of the vote to come home fifth.

Winter Wonderland is clearly a turn-off for Scots, being relegated down to fifth place north of the border with just 6% choosing it - below both Frosty the Snowman and Winter Song.
